Job description
Alecto is the UK's first AI-native law firm.
Our mission is to make the law accessible to everyone on the planet. We believe that the quality of service currently offered by the legal profession is woefully inadequate. It delivers bad value for money, frustrates the people it exists to serve, and lacks basic accountability.
We believe that a law firm should:
Speak in language people actually understand.
Equip people to make informed decisions on the issues that matter to them.
Provide an empathetic, proactive service aligned with people's end goals, not billable hours.
We're starting with conveyancing; the legal service that consumers are most likely to need, and the one most desperately in need of change. Conveyancing today is slow, opaque, and failing. One in three property transactions fall through, complaints run 3.3x higher than any other legal sector, and many firms still rely on post and fax. We're working hard to change that.
Backed by Firstminute Capital and a strong group of angel investors, we’re led by a founder who built and scaled Gen H, a fintech mortgage lender, to £1bn in annual lending and £5bn in financing. That hands-on experience in regulated financial services gives us a clear path to disrupt a fragmented £2.5 billion market. Our ambition is to build a full-service, AI-first law firm with global reach.
The roleWe're looking for a Staff or Senior Product Engineer to join as an early member of our engineering team. We're a small team of generalists with deep experience in startups and who care about our craft. We move fast, ship often, and hold ourselves to a high bar.
You’ll shape product direction from day one, and ship features to production within your first week. Requirements will be fuzzy - you’ll talk to users, form hypotheses, and iterate quickly to define what to build.
Key requirementsHave worked at early-stage startups and driven product direction.
Can think in terms of user problems, not just technical solutions.
Have scaled TypeScript projects.
Enjoy refining and customising your AI workflow into the early hours.
Can build AI agents or LLM-powered systems that go beyond simple prompting.
Bonus points for academic or applied experience in machine learning, especially if you can bridge the gap between research and production.
You're relentless about self-improvement and hold yourself to incredibly high standards, sweating the details others overlook.
You see problems as solvable and find opportunity in challenges, energising the people around you in the process.
You own outcomes, fixing problems rather than waiting for someone else to, and want to be measured on your impact.
You're low-ego and self-critical, open to feedback, and give honest feedback directly and kindly.
A TypeScript monorepo, React, tRPC and Tailwind.
Inngest for background jobs and event-driven workflows.
Deployed on Google Cloud Platform with Postgres.
£100,000 - £150,000, depending on experience.
Meaningful early-stage equity - you'll be an owner, not just an employee.
5% employer pension contributions.
Comprehensive private medical cover including dental and optical.
25 days holiday plus bank holidays.
Your choice in AI tooling.
This role is based in Shoreditch, London and reports directly to the founder.
