The Authority's mission is to safeguard the physical, operational, and financial integrity of flood risk management systems in southeastern Louisiana, protecting communities from flooding and hurricane storm surges. This is achieved in partnership with local, state, and federal agencies to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain flood protection projects.

Role Overview

The Safety Emergency Preparedness Coordinator plays a key role in supporting the Authority's safety, regulatory compliance, and emergency management programs across levee districts, facilities, police departments, and infrastructure related to flood protection. Reporting to the Safety Manager, this role involves coordinating emergency preparedness efforts, performing safety inspections and accident investigations, conducting training sessions, supporting grant management, maintaining essential records, and collaborating with various government partners during emergency response and recovery phases.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Success in this position demands comprehensive knowledge of emergency management and occupational safety standards, including but not limited to FEMA's Incident Command System as well as OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, and fire codes. The individual must demonstrate sound judgment, meticulous attention to detail, skills in accident investigation and risk assessment, effective training and public speaking abilities, strong relationship management, clear written communication, organization, grant compliance expertise, and the capacity to coordinate across multiple departments and external agencies. The role requires readiness to work in diverse field conditions, respond to severe weather incidents, and juggle multiple priorities in a potentially high-risk operational environment.

Unique Opportunity

This position uniquely integrates leadership in safety, emergency readiness, community education, compliance with regulations, and field inspections to support hurricane and flood defense initiatives in Southeast Louisiana. The coordinator will contribute to safeguarding employees, the public, and critical facilities, while supporting coordinated emergency actions across multiple jurisdictions.

Minimum Qualifications

• Four years of relevant experience in safety inspections or training, emergency preparedness, safety education/promotion, or related administrative services; OR
• Six years of full-time professional experience plus at least one year of experience in the above areas; OR
• Bachelor's degree plus one year of experience in these fields; OR
• Holding an advanced degree.

Additionally, every 30 semester hours of accredited college coursework can substitute for one year of full-time work experience, up to a maximum of 120 semester hours equivalent to four years, for the general work experience requirement.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the agency's official liaison with local, state, and federal agencies to promote planning, coordinate response efforts, and facilitate personnel and equipment exchanges
• Provide instruction for mandatory FEMA courses related to Incident Command Systems and emergency operations
• Represent the agency at meetings with partner organizations as directed by the Safety Risk Agency Manager
• Create and coordinate training initiatives and presentations concerning emergency preparedness
• Participate in meetings, conferences, and workshops on emergency management to stay informed and cultivate professional relationships
• Collaborate with the Safety Risk Agency Manager to develop and implement safety and health programs aimed at minimizing occupational injuries and illnesses
• Lead safety meetings covering health and safety topics, and communicate safety policies and procedures to all SLFPA-E personnel
• Perform safety inspections and document compliance of the Authority’s offices, job sites, and equipment with safety and fire codes
• Manage permits, safety and security aspects of special events and film productions, as well as inspections and security deposits related to these events
• Ensure completion and submission of safety and security documentation to designated Engineers for record-keeping

• Appointment may be Probational, Promotional, Lateral Transfer, Detail to Special Duty, or Job Appointment
• This role does not participate in a Career Progression Group
• Work schedule is full-time (40 hours per week) with flexible hours
• Salary will be determined based on candidate qualifications and experience
• Being an emergency-focused agency, SLFPA-E employees must be on call and ready to respond during Mississippi River flood or hurricane/tropical storm events, remaining on duty until officially released
