Residential Collections Driver

Position Overview

The role involves collecting and transporting residential refuse using side load trucks equipped with Power Take Off (PTO) systems and other related mechanisms. The driver will be responsible for maintaining the assigned collection vehicles and performing various duties supporting the Solid Waste Department. This position requires adherence to safety protocols and is subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

Key Duties

• Collect and haul garbage and refuse; empty containers into the garbage compactor truck, clean spillages, and control hydraulic compactors using PTO systems;
• Manage assigned residential debris and recycling routes, including collection of newspaper, plastics, cardboard, and metals;
• Conduct daily equipment maintenance checks and assist in repairs; perform pre-trip, trip, and post-trip inspections;
• Communicate with supervisors to make operational decisions and independently handle supplementary tasks required for collection routes;
• Maintain and repair refuse containers and roll-off boxes as needed;
• Observe and enforce safe work procedures throughout all activities;
• Submit regular work and equipment status reports to supervisors;
• Operate various heavy machinery, including hydraulic-lift systems and tractor trailers for refuse transportation;
• Perform general maintenance tasks, including removing debris too large for compactor trucks;
• Carry out additional relevant duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Skills

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED or have successfully completed two WorkKeys® Skills Assessments: Workplace Documents and Graphic Literacy at Level 3 or above.

A minimum of one year of driving experience with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred. Familiarity with PTO systems and associated equipment is advantageous. Coursework in automotive, transportation, or truck driving technology is also preferred.

Additional Requirements

• Possession of a valid New Mexico CDL (Class A or B) is mandatory;
• Obtain a City Operator's Permit within six months after hiring;
• Trainees must complete both classroom and on-the-job instruction for refuse collection services.

Working Environment

• The position involves outdoor work at landfill and field sites, operating heavy equipment, and traveling between locations;
• Exposure to noise, dust, smoke, fumes, hazardous chemicals, waste materials, and infectious agents is expected;
• Work will be performed in various weather conditions;
• Physical demands include moderate to heavy lifting, extended periods of walking, standing or sitting, motorized vehicle operation, and general manual tasks.
