About the organisation

Court Services Victoria (CSV) provides the corporate and facility services that support Victoria’s courts, tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission in carrying out judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative work. Together, the Supreme, County, Magistrates’, Children’s and Coroners courts, VCAT, the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria and CSV are collectively known as the Courts Group.

CSV’s workforce helps each jurisdiction deliver its own priorities while also enabling shared opportunities that benefit the wider system.

The Children’s Court of Victoria (ChCV) is a specialist court that deals with matters in two divisions. The Family Division considers cases about care and protection for children at risk of harm, while the Criminal Division handles criminal charges against young people aged 10 to 17.

Because the court is focused on children, young people and their families, its judicial, registry, dispute resolution and support services are tailored to their particular needs. The court works alongside youth justice, legal services, child protection and other community services to support the best interests of children in need of protection, while also promoting accountability and rehabilitation for young offenders and contributing to community safety.

This opportunity is based at the Melbourne Children’s Court and is suited to someone wanting to build on registry experience and strengthen management capability in a demanding but rewarding environment.

Role overview

The Registrar role involves a broad mix of administrative, customer-facing and in-court duties. Work may include bench clerk duties, answering enquiries by phone or at the counter, and completing back-office administration.

The position operates across a range of court contexts, including Family Division, Criminal Division, Intervention Orders, Koori Court and the Children and Young Person Infringement Notice System (CAYPINS).

Registrars also use powers under the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005, the Magistrates’ Court Act 1989 and other legislation and rules. This includes preparing and processing statutory and administrative documents and exercising discretionary quasi-judicial and statutory powers with sound professional judgement, while applying legislation, established rules, precedent and relevant practice directions.

Key accountabilities

  • Carry out legal, administrative and quasi-judicial duties that support the daily and ongoing operation of the Children’s Court, with limited direction from the court registrar.
  • Give accurate, authoritative guidance on court and tribunal processes and procedures, including advice based on Children’s Court of Victoria legislation, to legal practitioners, police, youth justice officers, government bodies, clients and members of the public.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with the judiciary, magistracy, outside organisations and other people or groups who interact with the court.
  • Use court and case-management technology, including systems such as Courtlink, LEX and related tools.

What you need

Applicants should hold a Certificate IV in Government (Court Services), or an equivalent qualification.

You should also have demonstrated understanding of the legislation, policies, procedures and operating practices relevant to Victorian courts and tribunals.

How to apply

Your application must include a cover letter and a resume.

Working arrangements

ChCV offers a Compressed Working Hours program to support work-life balance while keeping services operating smoothly. Where operationally feasible, employees may request one day off in each four-week cycle.

Other information

Applications are encouraged from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, including LGBTQIA+ people, women, people of all ages, people with disability, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and neurodiverse applicants.

CSV aims to build a workforce that reflects the community it serves.

If you need adjustments to the recruitment process or an alternative format for application materials, you can contact the person listed in the advertisement by email.

As part of its safe and respectful workplace approach, CSV carries out pre-employment screening, which may include reference checks, police checks and misconduct screening. These checks are completed confidentially and are a standard part of the hiring process.
