Laboratory Technician

Role overview

The Laboratory Technician supports routine testing in a clinical laboratory or blood bank division while working under the guidance of the Senior Medical Technician team. The role may also involve moving between laboratory sections so the technician stays familiar with procedures that may be needed urgently during shift work.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to delivering high-quality, compassionate care to patients across Riyadh care hospitals and clinics, either directly or through day-to-day lab work.
• Work assigned on-call and shift rosters, including weekdays, weekends, and public holidays.
• Collect or receive specimens using aseptic technique for laboratory analysis.
• Prepare samples for testing and verify specimen quality and integrity according to policy before testing begins.
• Produce daily worksheets based on diagnostic requirements.
• Carry out routine and moderately complex tests and analyses in line with SOPs and quality control checks.
• Prepare commonly used reagents and begin daily equipment calibration for routine operations.
• Monitor the performance of shared laboratory equipment by checking indicators as required by laboratory procedures.
• Assist in evaluating new procedures or methods under the close supervision of the Senior Technician.
• Perform daily calibration and maintenance of equipment and keep complete records of all related activities.
• Follow approved methods to maintain laboratory quality control and meet practice standards.
• Maintain accurate documentation of QC data and patient test results.
• Report technical or administrative issues to the Senior Technician or Chief Technician.
• Take part in troubleshooting laboratory problems and resolving operational issues.
• Keep adequate stocks of common reagents and consumables needed for laboratory work.
• Follow the laboratory quality system in all activities.
• Review and approve laboratory results under supervision before release through the Laboratory Information System.
• Help orient and train newly joined technicians.
• Be available for night duty, rotating weekends, and holiday shifts as required by the department.
• Educate patients and families according to their needs and the hospital's patient/family education policy, including proper documentation in the medical record.
• Safeguard patient health information and maintain confidentiality.

Reporting line

This role reports to the Senior Technician of the section and the Chief Technician.

Qualifications and requirements

• A bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification from an approved school, college, or university in Medical Technology.
• Active registration with the relevant authority for Medical Technologists/Technicians in the country of origin or recruitment, along with a Saudi Ministry of Health license.
• At least 1 year of related experience in a similar position.
• Strong spoken and written English skills.
• Professional behavior and strong interpersonal communication abilities.
• Practical computer skills.
• Knowledge of current proficiency testing and quality control methods.

Additional notes

This position does not include supervisory duties.

The work environment may require shift-based scheduling, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
