Role Overview

The Junior Software Engineer will collaborate closely with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and partners to upgrade legacy oceanographic systems by converting them into a scalable, event-driven microservices architecture. This position offers valuable hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, distributed systems, and disciplined Agile methodologies within a defense context.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and maintain containerized microservices that handle real-time sensor data processing.
• Contribute to web-based user interfaces and dashboards as part of the Command and Control (C2) system suite.
• Author and perform database queries while supporting migration of legacy data into a unified PostgreSQL system.
• Adhere to established Git workflows ensuring all code commits link to documented Agile issues and epics.
• Work with cross-functional engineering teams to identify and resolve system performance bottlenecks ensuring scalable solutions.
• Create detailed unit and integration tests to guarantee software reliability.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• Must be a U.S. citizen eligible to acquire and maintain a security clearance.
• Basic software development experience demonstrated via internships, academic projects, or personal projects.
• Proficient in at least one backend or web programming language such as Python, Java, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Working knowledge of relational databases with an emphasis on PostgreSQL and SQL querying.
• Experience using version control systems, particularly Git.
• Strong analytical problem-solving aptitude along with a team-oriented approach.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

• Experience or knowledge in messaging brokers or event-driven system architecture.
• Possession of an active security clearance.
• Familiarity with Agile practices and collaborative platforms like GitHub or GitLab.
• Basic insight into geospatial data and web mapping technologies.
