Job description

Overview

Working with minimal supervision, the Grant Writer II identifies potential funding sources, conducts thorough research, prepares grant proposals, manages complex grant awards, and processes granted funds. Collaborating closely with the program accountant, they develop program budgets and justifications. Their duties also include drafting reports, policies, procedures, and position papers, alongside conducting data analysis and exercising discretion when applying for and managing federal, state, and local grants. This position supports the agency's mission to foster a strong Fresno County by providing resources to eliminate poverty.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft detailed grant proposals, maintain essential supporting documents such as memorandums of understanding, budget justifications, correspondence, plans, policies, procedures, reports, position papers, surveys, forms, and brochures.
  • Prepare program budgets for funding initiatives and maintain a comprehensive agency document library for program use.
  • Research and analyze policy issues and funding opportunities related to agency programs, recommending strategic actions.
  • Coordinate planning efforts including scheduling meetings and maintaining relevant contact lists.
  • Evaluate funding announcements, gather resource materials, and manage schedules to meet deadlines while overseeing the grant opportunities clearinghouse.
  • Consult with program staff and community partners to develop funding approaches that satisfy requirements and explore alternative methods.
  • Identify community resources for collaboration to support proposals and engage in community planning activities.
  • Collect, organize, and track research data and background materials using physical and digital sources.
  • Present findings and facilitate planning sessions and orientations.
  • Support professional training related to research, planning, and resource development for agency program staff.
  • Travel as required for agency business ensuring reliable transportation.
  • Maintain punctual attendance and availability for work, including evenings and weekends as necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal studies, English, Communications, Business Administration, Language Arts, or a related human sciences field, or equivalent work experience substituting education on a year-for-year basis.
  • At least four years of successful grant writing experience with strong expertise in government grants.
  • Exceptional verbal, presentation, and written communication skills, demonstrating strong writing ability.
  • Professional Certification in Grant Writing is required or must be obtained within one year of employment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and competence in word processing, databases, internet research, charts, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, multimedia, and visual presentations.
  • Knowledge and sensitivity towards low-income populations and community needs preferred.
  • Capable of exercising independent judgment with limited oversight, goal-oriented, detail-focused, well-organized, dependable, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong organizational and public relations skills.
  • Willingness to work outside standard hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license and required auto insurance or reliable transportation; insurability under agency policy for those using agency vehicles.

Physical Demands

The role requires regular sitting, hand and finger dexterity, and verbal communication. Frequent standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms is expected. Occasionally, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be necessary. The role requires lifting/moving weights up to 50 pounds occasionally. Visual abilities such as close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment are essential.
