Position Overview

We seek an In-House General Counsel to establish and lead the legal department in our expanding direct-to-consumer health tech company. This role will ensure responsible scaling of products, marketing initiatives, and data usage in line with applicable legal regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee data privacy and protection strategies ensuring compliance with HIPAA, FTC guidance, CCPA/CPRA, state privacy laws, and related consumer regulations.
  • Review and negotiate a variety of commercial contracts including vendor, partnership, and SaaS agreements.
  • Advise on marketing claims and advertising compliance aligned with FTC regulations to maintain uninterrupted business operations.
  • Collaborate with product, marketing, and regulatory teams to align communications and claims with FDA, FTC, and consumer protection standards.
  • Develop and maintain privacy policies, terms of service, and customer legal documents.
  • Provide legal counsel on risks associated with DTC healthcare, consumer health data, digital health platforms, and AI-powered features, assuring regulatory compliance.
  • Create scalable legal review processes for marketing efforts, product releases, and partnerships.
  • Design and implement succession plans congruent with long-term business goals.
  • Contribute to regulatory risk management for consumer health products.
  • Manage external legal advisors when specialized knowledge is required.
  • Build the foundational legal framework needed for a fast-growing startup environment.

Candidate Requirements

  • Juris Doctor degree from an accredited institution and active law license.
  • Minimum 4 years legal experience, ideally in healthtech, digital health, or direct-to-consumer companies.
  • Proficient knowledge of data privacy and consumer data laws such as HIPAA and CCPA/CPRA.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate commercial contracts effectively.
  • Experience providing guidance on marketing claims, advertising regulations, and consumer protection laws.
  • Prior experience working in a DTC business setting is favorable.
  • Capability to operate cross-functionally in a fast-paced startup environment.
