About the Company
Our client is a vertically integrated real estate investment and service firm based in New York City. The organization operates a multifaceted platform encompassing property management, construction management, acquisitions, lending, and proprietary data analytics focused on the NYC multifamily housing market. With ownership of over 50 multifamily properties and plans to add more than 250 units in the upcoming year, the firm works alongside institutional investors managing a diverse array of residential units ranging from luxury Class A to affordable and rent-stabilized buildings throughout NYC.
Role Summary
They are seeking an experienced Controller to lead daily accounting operations for their expanding portfolio. This role is perfect for an operationally focused accounting leader with extensive experience in multifamily property accounting, strong proficiency in Yardi software, and a successful track record managing remote and offshore accounting teams within fast-growing environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close activities for multiple multifamily properties and related legal entities.
- Review, approve, and independently certify property-level financial statements ensuring GAAP compliance.
- Manage financial reporting schedules, delivering 40+ monthly financial packages reliably on time.
- Rapidly identify and resolve discrepancies in property financial data and related reports.
- Oversee reconciliation processes covering bank accounts, security deposits, taxes, and intercompany transactions.
- Supervise accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and treasury functions.
- Coordinate audit processes, tax filings, and lender reporting obligations.
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of remote and offshore property accountants and support staff.
- Enhance accounting operations and improve workflow efficiency as the portfolio scales.
- Drive process improvements, operational efficiencies, and reinforce internal control mechanisms.
- Support onboarding of newly acquired assets, including initial balance sheet setup, accrual establishment, bank account coordination, treasury functions, and asset handover to property accountants.
- Collaborate with Asset Management teams on variance analysis and net operating income (NOI) drivers.
- Participate in biweekly client and ownership update meetings addressing financial and operational topics.
- Develop and refine financial reporting and analysis tools using advanced Microsoft Excel capabilities.
- Act as system lead and subject matter expert for the Yardi property management software.
- Manage preparation and review of NYC regulatory filings such as Tax Commission (TC) certiorari support and Real Property Income & Expense (RPIE) filings, including independent review and signoff.
Candidate Qualifications
- Minimum 8 years experience in real estate accounting with a focus on multifamily properties.
- Strong, proven expertise in multifamily property accounting operations.
- CPA certification preferred but not mandatory.
- Experience managing extensive portfolios across multiple entities simultaneously.
- Proven leadership managing remote and offshore accounting staff.
- Advanced skillset in Yardi software and Microsoft Excel.
- Comprehensive knowledge of accrual accounting principles and property-level financial reporting.
- Experience handling New York City-specific regulatory filings including TC and RPIE submissions.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and deadline management abilities.
- Capability to perform effectively within a dynamic, fast-paced growth environment.

Compensation and Benefits
