Role Overview

The Wall Street Journal seeks an experienced journalist to report on China, a key global economic power and geopolitical player. This role involves covering the country's transformative economic landscape, technological leadership, and mounting internal challenges under President Xi Jinping's strengthening administration.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify and report on major trends across China's political, economic, and social domains with in-depth analysis.
• Deliver breaking news and thorough coverage on topics including politics, economy, society, geopolitics, and military developments.
• Explore long-term shifts in public sentiment, political environment, economic factors, and demographics in China.
• Blend on-site reporting with comprehensive insights from data, surveys, and expert opinions.
• Craft engaging stories using a variety of formats including news articles, in-depth investigations, visuals, and multimedia collaborations.
• Collaborate with international colleagues to produce global coverage focusing on the intersection of economics, geopolitics, and business.
• Build and maintain a diverse network of sources across government, business, finance, academia, and policy sectors to generate exclusive reports.

Qualifications and Skills

• Demonstrated success in impactful reporting on politics, economics, business, or China-related topics for reputable news outlets.
• Capability to respond swiftly to breaking news while prioritizing accuracy and reader relevance.
• Proficiency in analyzing complex and sometimes conflicting data to extract meaningful insights.
• Strong narrative skills to produce compelling, well-researched stories with vivid writing.
• Ability to synthesize broad coverage areas including political, economic, social, military, and geopolitical stories.
• Proven track record in initiating, proposing, and executing ambitious journalistic projects alongside collaborative team efforts.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills, comfortable operating across multiple time zones.
• Deep interest in China's global economic role and talent for identifying stories where geopolitics and finance intersect.
• Chinese language knowledge is advantageous but not mandatory.
