Position Overview
The University of Rhode Island seeks a full-time Academic Advisor to support undergraduate students assigned to specific academic majors. This permanent professional staff role offers a potential transition to a remote/hybrid work schedule after six months. The advisor facilitates students' academic journey from college entry through to graduation by providing individual and group sessions, workshops, and collaborating with faculty and administration.
Primary Responsibilities
- Monitor and update students' academic records and enrollment status in the information system.
- Initiate proactive advising outreach and guide students through course selection, minors, majors, and readmission processes year-round.
- Ensure students are progressing toward timely degree completion and communicate relevant updates.
- Work collaboratively with other advisors, departments, and support offices to enhance student success and retention.
- Participate in academic performance reviews including scholastic standing assessments.
- Organize and help execute programs, events, and living-learning community activities related to assigned majors.
- Deliver orientation and transfer advising presentations and assist students exploring major options.
- Maintain updated student notes using student success software and develop advising materials.
- Evaluate and post credit from external sources and escalate issues as needed.
- Coordinate with experiential/internship and career advisors to provide current information on internships, majors, and career opportunities.
- Support students transferring from the Community College of Rhode Island and advise students in 4+1 and ABM programs when appropriate.
- Teach First-Year seminars as assigned and participate in university committees, trainings, and conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Required: Master's degree with at least two years of academic advising experience (graduate experience included), OR Bachelor's degree with a minimum of five years advising experience in higher education or related counseling capacity.
- Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with data management and student records systems.
- Experience working with diverse populations and dedication to inclusion, equity, and social justice principles.
- Preferred: Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education counseling, or related field.
- Familiarity with Brightspace or similar learning management platforms, PeopleSoft, online advising tools, and presentation technologies.
- Experience with student success platforms such as Starfish and with college student populations.
- Assessment skills are advantageous.
