Job description
About the Company
Z is driven by a purpose of improving journeys now and into the future. As a major transport energy business in New Zealand, it focuses on delivering energy that is safe, dependable, and secure, while also developing new energy solutions for a rapidly evolving world. Z is the New Zealand arm of Ampol, an independent trans-Tasman energy group with offices around the world, working together under a shared purpose and global reach.
About the Role
This graduate opportunity is designed to prepare future talent for a changing energy sector and for the organisation of the future. The role offers early-career exposure to a large commercial business operating in a dynamic environment. Over a two-year programme, you will move through different business areas, gain wide-ranging experience, and build a diverse set of capabilities. You will be supported by a buddy, guided by a mentor, and given opportunities to connect with senior leaders.
Programme Structure
The programme is intentionally broad and generalist, offering a variety of learning experiences across multiple business functions. Rotations may include time within business units as well as placements at a bulk fuel terminal and retail sites. Exposure areas include finance, strategy, performance and value, legal, people and culture/HR, energy solutions, supply chain, pricing, communications, and other related areas.
What You Will Need
Z is open to graduates from a wide range of disciplines and is looking for a strong mix of academic achievement and personal strengths. You should bring solid results from your studies, even if your full transcript is not yet available, along with a practical, solutions-oriented mindset and the willingness to take on varied challenges. Good communication skills are important, especially for working with different stakeholders, building professional relationships, and appreciating different perspectives. Prior work experience is also valued, whether gained through internships, part-time work, or other employment before, during, or after study. A genuine interest in Z’s values and its commitment to Aotearoa New Zealand is also expected.
What Z Offers
This role comes with a competitive package that includes a short-term incentive plan, medical insurance, and an enhanced employer KiwiSaver contribution. Graduates may also take up to six months of unpaid leave to travel and then return to their career. You will have direct access to senior leaders, including the Executive Team and wider Senior Leadership Group, who actively support graduate development. The company offers a hybrid working arrangement, a supportive team environment, retail discounts and cashbacks through its benefits and recognition platform, and ongoing learning and development opportunities through rotations and broader career growth across the organisation. Wellbeing support includes enhanced leave, free flu vaccinations, and mental health assistance. You will also receive two days each year to volunteer through the Good in your Hood scheme. As part of the Ampol Group, Z also offers the possibility of future opportunities beyond New Zealand.
Salary and Benefits
The base salary for this position is NZD 69,975 per year. In addition, the package includes a 10% short-term incentive based on both company and individual performance, a 5% employer contribution to KiwiSaver, and health insurance through Southern Cross.
Recruitment Process
Applicants should submit a CV, cover letter, and academic transcript. In the cover letter, candidates are asked to select one of the company values and explain why it resonates with them. Applications close on Tuesday 30 June 2026. After the deadline, applications will be reviewed and candidates will be contacted during July. Successful applicants will first have an initial conversation and psychometric testing, followed by a group interview and assessment day at Z’s head office in Wellington in August. Offers are planned for February 2027.
Eligibility
To be eligible, you must be either a recent graduate who finished within the last two years at the time of application, or a final-year student in 2026. You must also have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand indefinitely.
Additional Information
This programme is intended to launch a career in a complex and commercial energy business. It is designed to expose graduates to a wide range of functions and to help build capability through structured rotations, mentoring, leadership access, and development opportunities. The role is based in Wellington and is full-time and onsite.
Start timing: successful candidates are expected to join in February 2027.
