Job description
About the role
We are looking for energetic and committed Youth Support Workers to help create positive change for tamariki and rangatahi. These positions are part of the Youth Service and may be based in Christchurch, Rangiora, or Rolleston, with work carried out in both residential and community settings.
The young people in these services may have experienced significant trauma and may also be neurodiverse. In this role, you will use a trauma-informed style, maintain clear professional boundaries, and provide steady, compassionate support.
Key responsibilities
- Assist rangatahi with everyday routines such as preparing meals, giving medication, arranging school drop-offs and pick-ups, attending appointments, supporting personal care, and helping with household tasks.
- Promote independence, self-belief, and the growth of practical life skills.
- Help maintain a safe, supportive, and welcoming whare.
- Take part in regular team hui, supervision sessions, and learning and development opportunities.
- Support rangatahi to remain connected with their culture, whānau, and wider community.
What you’ll bring
You should be calm, caring, and respectful, with strong communication skills and the ability to work well in a team. You’ll need to value privacy, confidentiality, and professional boundaries, and be comfortable working a rotating roster that includes days, evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
Experience or knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support is an advantage, and health and wellbeing qualifications are also desirable.
About the organisation
The team is values-led and supportive, with a shared focus on making a meaningful difference every day. The organisation’s values are Respect (Whakaute), Reliability (Pono), Transparency (Puataata), and Responsiveness (Whakautu).
The organisation works in partnership with adults and rangatahi across Te Waipounamu, supporting people to live the lives they choose and to achieve their goals, dreams, and aspirations as valued members of their communities.
Christchurch youth services include emergency housing, transitional housing, Individual Care Responses in a 24/7 supported environment, and community-based support in schools, homes, and local settings.
Safeguarding and checks
The organisation has a strong commitment to protecting children. All employees will be screened to a level appropriate for the role.
Essential requirements
- A current First Aid Certificate, or a willingness to complete one at the employer’s cost.
- A full, current New Zealand Driver Licence.
- Legal right to work in New Zealand.
- If applicable, a valid work or student visa with at least 12 months remaining.
- Availability to work across all shift types.
Application note
The closing date is Thursday 30 July 2026 at 5:00 pm. Because the service operates at pace, the deadline may be brought forward, so early applications are encouraged.
