Job description
About the Organization
Clayful is a purpose-led early-stage EdTech company built by educators, coaches, and education technology specialists. The team is focused on addressing the youth mental wellness crisis by making free, life-changing coaching available to middle and high school students across the United States.
Role Summary
Clayful is hiring mental health coaches to work with young people through chat, audio, and video sessions. This is a 1099 contract opportunity with support delivered during and after school hours, generally between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm PST. Weekly hours are variable and usually fall around 1 to 3+ hours, depending on student demand. Candidates based in California, the Pacific Time Zone, or the Mountain Time Zone will be given priority, and Spanish speakers are also preferred.
The pay is $20 per hour, plus a bonus opportunity. Compensation is intentionally structured to reflect school-district partnerships and the goal of reaching students who may otherwise have no access to mental health support. This role is best suited to someone seeking flexible, meaningful work alongside other commitments rather than a primary income source.
What the Job Involves
You will provide both scheduled and on-demand coaching to students in grades 4 through 12 using Clayful's platform. Sessions may be conducted by chat or via audio/video. Coaching is delivered on weekdays during school and after-school windows, with the highest demand typically between 7:00 am and 2:00 pm PST and again from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm PST.
Because demand changes with the school calendar and student needs, the schedule is not fixed. Hours can drop during breaks and summer periods, making this a strong fit for coaches who want flexibility and mission-aligned work.
Responsibilities
- Offer timely, empathetic coaching to young people dealing with stress, relationships, identity, and academic pressure.
- Work respectfully with students from diverse and historically marginalized backgrounds, applying cultural awareness in every interaction.
- Use the platform's crisis procedures when needed and rely on live support from licensed Coach Supervisors during difficult conversations.
- Continue learning as the company updates its tools, workflows, and coaching approach.
Training and Support
- Complete onboarding before working with students, including coaching frameworks, crisis-response guidance, and platform training.
- Receive real-time supervision from licensed Coach Supervisors while sessions are in progress.
- Join a network of coaches who share a commitment to youth support and mentorship.
- Participate in continuing training as the startup evolves and new tools are introduced.
- Be part of a mission-driven environment where each student served has limited access to mental health help elsewhere.
Requirements
- Valid California Wellness Coach Certification, or eligibility through one of the approved pathways; you do not need to live in California.
- Education pathway: an associate's or bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Addiction Studies, or Psychology from a California institution, plus 400 hours of field experience in care coordination, wellness promotion, screening, and/or education.
- Workforce pathway: at least 1,350 hours of work with youth up to age 25 in pre-clinical behavioral health within the past 6 years.
- At least 1 year of coaching experience with proof of certification.
- Associate's degree or above.
- Four years of experience in mental health, youth work, or coaching.
- A dependable laptop or desktop computer and a stable internet connection with at least 50 Mbps download speed.
- A private workspace that is quiet and free from distractions.
- Must live in the United States for the full duration of the contract.
- Comfort with startup-style ambiguity, changing tools, and variable hours.
Who Will Do Well Here
This opportunity is a strong match for someone who is naturally empathetic, motivated by mission-driven work, and genuinely enjoys working with young people. The ideal candidate is comfortable with uncertainty, works well without heavy supervision, and values feedback, professional growth, and team support.
Application Process
- Submit a written application.
- Complete a video interview.
- Attend a live group interview.
- Provide two references.
- Pass a background check.
- Complete the Wellness Coach Certification process, or start the free application process if needed.
Compensation
The role pays $20 per hour and includes bonus potential. Hours are variable and tied to student need, typically ranging from 1 to 3+ hours per week.
Additional Notes
The company notes that many coaches handle this work alongside other jobs. If you are looking for a primary source of income, this position may not be the right fit. However, if you want flexible work with meaningful impact, it may be a strong opportunity.
A coach from Florida shared that they had stayed with the organization for nearly four years because they believe in its mission and its ability to meet students where they are. The company also states that 79% of its coaches would recommend the role to another coach.
