About the Organization

The Corporation of the County of Lambton, located in Southwestern Ontario along Lake Huron and the St. Clair River, serves a population of about 128,000 residents. As a major regional employer with around 1,300 employees, the county provides a wide array of services across seven divisions including emergency medical services, provincial offences court, long-term care, libraries, museums, public health, social services, and public works with a commitment to sustainability and community partnership.

Role Overview

This position involves patrolling the County road network during weekends to assess conditions, document maintenance requirements, and coordinate deployment of resources to address winter storm impacts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct weekend patrols on County roads to ensure compliance with Minimum Maintenance Standards as per Regulation 55 under the Municipal Act.
  • Manage and direct County personnel, equipment, and materials in winter storm response according to the Salt Management Plan and Storm Response Guidelines.
  • Initiate County workforce call-outs based on weather severity and communicate road conditions to local municipalities as needed.
  • Handle public and police complaints by providing information, investigating issues, and advising on corrective measures or explaining County policies.
  • Maintain detailed logs and reports regarding road statuses and incidents on County roads.
  • Adhere to County Health & Safety policies and relevant Occupational Health and Safety legislation to ensure safe working practices.
  • Recommend improvements to winter control operations based on field observations.
  • Serve as backup operator for County machinery, including snow ploughs, backhoes, and loaders during winter operations.
  • Maintain knowledge of municipal winter control protocols, legal requirements, and operational procedures.
  • Stay informed and implement relevant legislation, collective agreements, and County policies.
  • Meet physical demands as defined by the position’s Physical Demands Analysis.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent, including completion of the AORS municipal road maintenance course.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License, Class DZ minimum.
  • At least three years of experience in public works roles related to the responsibilities of this position.
