Key Responsibilities
- Carry out in-person interviews with anglers at designated access points and boating locations.
- Travel to assigned sites, which may include beaches, piers, docks, jetties, and access points used by private, charter, and head boats.
- Record angler information about fishing experiences in line with established survey protocols.
- Weigh, measure, and identify fish caught by anglers.
- Occasionally assist with at-sea data collection on head boats (for-hire vessels).
- Complete surveys using a handheld tablet application.
- Finish required training, including survey procedure instruction and fish identification testing.
Minimum Qualification
A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management, or a closely related technical discipline is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with practical knowledge of marine fisheries, waterways, and public boat landings throughout coastal South Carolina are preferred. Prior experience with surveys, handheld tablets, and online assignment tracking tools is also desirable. The role requires the ability to work independently with minimal oversight and communicate professionally with members of the public, recreational and commercial fishermen, wholesale dealers, and retailers. Strong fish identification skills at the species level, along with the ability to take accurate length and weight measurements, are important. Familiarity with South Carolina marine fisheries laws and regional commercial and recreational fishing trends is an advantage. The position is primarily based in the Bluffton/Hilton Head area of Beaufort County and requires flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.
