Wetland Biologist

Position Overview

Ducks Unlimited, in collaboration with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), is seeking a Wetland Biologist to support wetland conservation and restoration initiatives across Indiana. This full-time position, based at a USDA NRCS Service Center within Northeast Indiana—options include Fort Wayne, Huntington, or other regional centers—runs from August 2026 through 2030 with potential extension based on funding.

Primary Responsibilities

The Wetland Biologist will deliver technical expertise to enhance wetland conservation, wildlife habitat, and natural resource management programs, particularly supporting the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP) Wetland Reserve Easement (WRE) component. Duties include conducting field assessments, advising private landowners on wetland restoration and management, preparing relevant documentation such as Compatible Use Authorizations (CUAs), monitoring project effectiveness, and collaborating with NRCS and conservation partners. Additionally, the role involves supporting program reporting, applying environmental policies including NEPA, providing training and guidance to NRCS staff, compiling data for conservation projects, and actively participating in relevant workshops and meetings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Biology, Fisheries Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Conservation Biology, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or related fields.
• Preferably two or more years of professional experience in wetland management, restoration, or related natural resource disciplines.
• Experience with private lands conservation, habitat restoration, or Farm Bill programs highly valued.
• Ability to work in field and office settings, including travel within Indiana and occasional overnight stays.
• Comfortable working outdoors under various weather conditions and remote locations.

Required Knowledge and Abilities

• Comprehensive understanding of wetland ecology, hydrology, and associated flora and fauna.
• Familiarity with wildlife habitat management, especially for migratory birds and waterfowl.
• Knowledge of relevant environmental laws, invasive species management, and endangered species considerations.
• Experience with USDA Farm Bill conservation programs, particularly WRE, is preferred.
• Competence in developing habitat management and restoration plans.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with GIS tools (ArcGIS), GPS, and conservation planning software desired.
• Strong organizational skills, project management capabilities, and ability to operate field equipment safely.
• Excellent communication skills and the capacity to work independently and collaboratively.
• Valid driver’s license with willingness to use personal vehicle when necessary.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is competitive, ranging between $54,360 and $56,000 annually, commensurate with experience and education.
