Job description
Role overview
This is a senior finance leadership opportunity with a fast-growing clinical-stage biotech company in the United States. The role sits close to the CFO and is responsible for running the day-to-day finance function while helping build the financial infrastructure needed for scale. It combines hands-on controllership with broader leadership across accounting, reporting, audit, treasury, tax, compliance, and finance systems.
You will be accountable for the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting across all close cycles, with a strong emphasis on U.S. GAAP compliance and readiness for future growth. The position also involves improving systems, introducing automation, and strengthening processes to support efficiency and insight in a highly regulated environment.
This is a high-ownership position for a leader who can balance execution, structure, and strategic thinking in a mission-driven, high-growth setting.
Responsibilities
- Manage the full accounting cycle, including month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, with accurate and timely GAAP-compliant reporting.
- Direct general ledger activity, journal entries, account reconciliations, and consolidated financial reporting across the company.
- Handle technical accounting matters such as R&D accruals, clinical trial spend, stock compensation, leases, revenue recognition, and financing-related transactions.
- Act as the main contact for external auditors and lead the annual audit from planning through final completion.
- Oversee treasury activities, including cash management, forecasting, bank relationships, wire approvals, and liquidity tracking.
- Establish and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and reporting frameworks, with SOX-readiness in mind.
- Coordinate tax compliance with outside advisors for federal, state, and local requirements, including R&D credit support.
- Lead the finance systems roadmap, including ERP and related tools, and identify opportunities to improve automation and use of AI.
- Build, coach, and manage a strong finance team that operates with accountability, precision, and continuous improvement.
- Work closely with the CFO and executive team to provide reliable financial analysis and board-level reporting.
Requirements
- 12 or more years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, including deep controllership responsibilities in growth-focused organizations.
- At least 3 years of senior leadership experience in biotech, pharma, or another complex regulated industry.
- Strong command of technical accounting and U.S. GAAP, along with direct experience managing audits and internal control environments.
- Demonstrated ownership of full month-end close cycles and external audits from planning to final delivery.
- CPA certification is required, and a Big Four or comparable public accounting background is strongly preferred.
- Experience building and scaling finance systems, processes, and controls in fast-moving environments.
- Practical treasury and cash management experience, including day-to-day operational involvement.
- Ability to lead lean teams while contributing both strategically and operationally.
- Sound judgment, strong ethics, and the ability to act as a trusted partner to senior leadership.
- Clear communication and leadership skills, with the ability to bring order and clarity to ambiguous situations.
Benefits
- Annual compensation of USD 320,000 to USD 360,000.
- Equity participation through a long-term incentive program.
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage with substantial employer support.
- 401(k) plan with company matching contributions.
- Flexible paid time off to support personal and professional balance.
- Paid parental leave and adoption support.
- Opportunity to join a well-funded biotech company working on innovative drug discovery.
- Exposure to advanced scientific and operational work with significant leadership influence.
