Accra Metropolitan University, also known as Accra Met, is a chartered university in Accra, Ghana operating under Charter Number GTEC/Ch00028. It builds on the heritage of Laweh University College, recognized as the first accredited open university in Ghana and the second in West Africa.

Role Summary

The Vice-Chancellor serves as the Chief Executive Officer and the university’s top academic and administrative leader. The position exists to guide the institution strategically, academically, and operationally so that it can strengthen its mission and compete effectively in Ghana and internationally.

• Lead the institution with a clear, ethical, and forward-looking leadership style that drives transformation.
• Develop and execute the university’s strategic plan and long-term expansion agenda.
• Champion strong performance in teaching, learning, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and community service.
• Improve governance practices, accountability, quality assurance, risk control, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Raise the university’s profile through stronger academic standards, programme quality, and visibility at national and international levels.
• Foster an inclusive, high-performing academic environment for staff and students.
• Secure funding, partnerships, and investments to support financial stability and growth.
• Drive digital transformation, technology-enabled learning, and efficient modern university operations.
• Strengthen industry partnerships, employability of graduates, global collaboration, and public-private engagement.
• Model integrity, discipline, fairness, diversity, and respect for institutional governance structures and values.

Person Specification

The successful candidate should bring a strong background in academic leadership, scholarship, research, and institutional administration, along with proven experience in leading a university or similar higher education organisation at a senior level. They should understand higher education governance, accreditation, quality assurance, and regulatory expectations in depth.

The role also calls for someone who can rally faculty, staff, and students behind a shared vision; manage finances well; attract funding and partnerships; and engage effectively with stakeholders. Strong communication, negotiation, and public representation abilities are essential, as is a firm commitment to academic freedom, inclusion, ethical leadership, and student-focused education. The candidate should also appreciate digital innovation, entrepreneurship, and the evolving landscape of higher education, while demonstrating sound judgment, emotional maturity, and a consistently high standard of personal integrity.

Qualification and Experience

• A PhD or an equivalent terminal qualification from a recognised university is required.
• The candidate must be an Associate Professor or Professor, or have comparable senior-level academic and institutional leadership experience.
• A strong record of teaching, research, publications, academic administration, and public or professional service is expected.
• Applicants should have significant experience in university governance, strategic planning, quality assurance, programme development, and institutional leadership.
• Evidence of successful resource mobilisation, partnership development, and stakeholder management must be demonstrated.
• The applicant should be prepared to lead a modern university in a competitive, regulated, and technology-driven higher education environment.

Tenure

The appointment is for a four-year term and may be renewed based on satisfactory performance and the Governing Council’s terms.
