Opportunity

This role exists because payroll is currently handled within the bookkeeping function, which is sufficient for simple runs but creates pressure when calculations become more complex, deadlines tighten, or multi-state compliance issues arise. The firm is looking for a payroll-focused specialist who can take complete ownership of the process.

You will manage payroll end to end for the client portfolio, act as the primary internal resource for payroll questions, and be the person clients rely on to ensure every payroll is completed accurately and on time. This is a role with significant responsibility, where even a small mistake can directly affect someone’s paycheck.

What you will do

You will run payroll for all relevant clients in Gusto, making sure each cycle is processed correctly and within deadline. Your work will include managing benefit deductions, garnishments, mid-cycle changes, and variable or production-based pay structures commonly used in veterinary practices.

You will keep up with payroll tax rules across multiple states and make sure W-2s, 1099s, and new hire reporting are completed properly. You will also identify compliance concerns and unusual cases early so they can be addressed before they turn into issues.

In addition, you will reconcile payroll entries in Xero so payroll and bookkeeping records remain consistent. You will serve as the internal payroll authority by responding to team questions, documenting client payroll setups in Financial Cents, and helping the bookkeeping team build a stronger understanding of payroll basics over time.

Compensation and schedule

Pay ranges from $25 to $38 per hour, depending on experience. The role begins at 10 to 15 hours per week, with the opportunity to grow as the firm expands.

Working hours are flexible as long as payroll deadlines are met. The position is fully remote and based in the United States.
