Job description

Role overview

Auckland Council is seeking a Veterinary Nurse to join its Animal Management team at the Henderson Animal Shelter in West Auckland. This permanent, full-time position is focused on supporting veterinary work in a shelter setting and helping maintain high standards of animal care and welfare.

The role is based at Henderson Animal Shelter and involves working 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday. It is a chance to contribute directly to the wellbeing of animals, support community outcomes, and assist the wider shelter operation.

What you will do

  • Support veterinarians before, during, and after surgeries, including preparation and monitoring.
  • Assist with consultations and ensure animals are comfortable and clinical equipment is ready.
  • Administer medicines and treatments, and keep medical records accurate and up to date.
  • Provide caring guidance to pet owners on recovery, post-operative care, and general animal health.
  • Help with veterinary procedures and medical care for animals housed in the shelter.
  • Keep surgical and clinic spaces clean, hygienic, and well maintained.
  • Help train staff in disease control, animal husbandry, and welfare practices.
  • Take part in community education and outreach activities when required.
  • Support other council teams, including Parks and Community Facilities, with veterinary assistance as needed.

About you

You are a compassionate veterinary professional with a strong interest in animal welfare and a collaborative approach to work. You are comfortable handling animals of different sizes and temperaments, and you bring strong organisational skills to a busy environment. You also enjoy teaching others, promoting high standards of hygiene, and helping ensure smooth day-to-day shelter operations.

Requirements

  • A diploma or degree in Veterinary Nursing, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Current registration with the New Zealand Veterinary Nursing Association, or the ability to register.
  • At least 2 years of experience working as a veterinary nurse in a clinic or animal shelter.
  • A full New Zealand driver’s licence.
  • Willingness to complete a pre-employment drug and alcohol test, as the position is considered safety-sensitive.

Benefits and workplace culture

  • Competitive salary, benefits, and opportunities to continue developing professionally.
  • Flexible working arrangements and a strong focus on wellbeing.
  • A supportive environment that values continuous improvement.
  • A workplace committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Recognition through GenderTick accreditation and Pride Pledge signatory status.
  • An organisation serving the diverse communities of Tāmaki Makaurau.
