Job description
The role
Stuff reaches more than 2 million New Zealanders each month, giving this role the chance to shape products at a truly national level. This position is suited to a UX Designer who enjoys both user research and hands-on design work, and who is motivated by solving meaningful product challenges for audiences who depend on these experiences every day.
The focus of the role is not just polished UI, but a deeper understanding of users, thoughtful problem-solving, and the creation of digital experiences that genuinely improve how people interact with content and services. The team is also exploring how AI, personalisation, and new technologies can be used to build better audience experiences.
What you will do
You will partner with product managers, engineers, editorial teams, and analysts to identify user needs, interpret insights, and turn them into practical, engaging solutions. Your work will cover the full UX lifecycle from discovery through to delivery.
- Carry out user research, usability tests, and audience discovery activities
- Map journeys, develop wireframes, build prototypes, and design interactions
- Convert qualitative and quantitative findings into product ideas and improvements
- Design experiences for web, mobile, and new digital platforms
- Run experiments and use testing plus data to confirm design decisions
- Advocate for accessibility and inclusive design throughout the process
- Help maintain and improve the design system
- Work closely with engineering teams to implement design solutions
- Use AI-enabled tools to speed up research, ideation, prototyping, and optimisation
Why this opportunity stands out
Stuff is in a period of major change, with shifts in how people discover, consume, and pay for digital content. That creates real design challenges and real impact. The work here influences how millions of New Zealanders engage with news and content every day, and the team is actively examining how AI can help improve both products and workflows.
What you will bring
The ideal candidate will bring strong UX experience, a collaborative mindset, and the confidence to guide design decisions with research, evidence, and stakeholder communication.
- At least 4 years of experience in UX, product design, or interaction design
- A portfolio that shows end-to-end thinking and shipped outcomes
- Strong capability in user research, usability testing, and customer-focused design
- Advanced skills in Figma and modern prototyping tools
- Comfort using analytics and data to shape design choices
- Good knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design
- Experience working in agile product teams
- Strong communication skills and the ability to influence stakeholders
- A team-oriented approach and a genuine commitment to great user experiences
Nice to have
- Experience with subscription, media, content, or consumer digital products
- Exposure to AI-assisted design tools and workflows
- Background in personalisation, recommendation systems, or conversational interfaces
- Experience with experimentation, A/B testing, and optimisation work
What you will get
- The chance to shape products used by millions of New Zealanders
- A skilled, supportive, and highly collaborative team
- Room to explore new ideas, tools, and ways of working
- Work that supports quality journalism and informed communities
- Ongoing learning and development opportunities
- Flexible working and a strong emphasis on wellbeing
