Job description
About the company
Notion is a collaborative AI workspace that brings knowledge, projects, meetings, and AI tools into one place so teams can work with more speed, clarity, and less fragmentation. It is used by millions of people, from individuals and small teams to large enterprises.
Employees, referred to as Notinos, are expected to model the product’s future by using it themselves first. The company values strong craftsmanship, durable building practices, and the belief that meaningful work remains deeply human. The focus is not just on releasing new features, but on shaping how people will work together in the AI era, whether that means building a company’s system of record, creating and managing AI agents, or removing repetitive work so customers can spend more time on important tasks.
Role overview
This position is for an experienced User Researcher who will generate insights that improve Notion’s AI-driven experiences. The work centers on understanding how people find, create, and use AI capabilities such as Notion Agent and Chat across a variety of product scenarios. The role calls for strong research execution, strategic judgment, and comfort working with AI technology and AI product development.
The role may be located in San Francisco or New York City. The team works together in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, and the successful candidate should be comfortable being present on those anchor days.
What you will do
- Plan and run research across the full AI product journey, including early discovery, concept evaluation, prototype and usability testing, and post-launch assessment, then turn findings into clear guidance for product decisions.
- Study how people collaborate with AI in real work settings, including how they set goals, assign tasks, review results, and stay oriented as the system takes on more initiative.
- Work closely with Design, Product, Engineering, and Data Science to bring research and user feedback into each stage of product development.
- Present insights in audience-specific ways and use creative formats such as videos, podcasts, or workshops to make the research easier to understand and act on.
- Link research outcomes to business goals, explain why findings matter, make them actionable, and help drive follow-through after the research is delivered.
What you should bring
- Strong familiarity with AI products and the ability to reason about model behavior, uncertainty, and system limitations as they affect the user experience.
- A systems-oriented mindset that helps you map complex journeys and identify where problems occur across inputs, model output, UI, and governance or guardrail layers.
- Comfort working in fast-moving 0-to-1 environments, making decisions under ambiguity, knowing when to move quickly and when to go deeper, and delivering an end-to-end study in about a week when needed.
- Deep research expertise with the ability to choose the right method for each question and apply both qualitative and quantitative approaches effectively.
- Ability to use behavioral and business data to refine questions, interpret results, and connect insights to measurable impact by triangulating multiple data sources.
- At least 3 years of UX research experience in industry.
Preferred background
- Experience researching AI-enabled products, especially agentic workflows or automation tools, as well as B2B products.
- Hands-on familiarity with AI research tools such as Outset, Listen Labs, or Dovetail.
- Experience presenting research findings to executive-level stakeholders.
- A master’s or PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Behavioral Economics, Anthropology, Sociology, or a related discipline.
- Interest in the work and ideas of computing pioneers such as Douglas Engelbart, Alan Kay, and Bret Victor.
Compensation and benefits
Notion offers competitive cash compensation, equity, and benefits. Pay is determined by several factors, including location, role scope, complexity, experience, and expertise. For candidates based in San Francisco or New York City, the estimated base salary range is $164,000 to $190,000 per year.
Application and policy information
By submitting an application, candidates acknowledge that Notion and its affiliates and subsidiaries will collect and process personal information under Notion’s Global Recruiting Privacy Policy and NYLL 144.
AI philosophy
The company expects employees to be curious, experimental, and willing to use AI as a practical partner in their work. While deep AI expertise is not required for every position, some roles do call for AI fluency as a core qualification. The people who thrive here use AI to think better and help others build on their work more easily.
Equal opportunity and accommodations
Notion welcomes applicants from many backgrounds and encourages people to apply even if they do not meet every requirement. The company is an equal opportunity employer and makes hiring decisions without regard to legally protected characteristics. Qualified applicants with arrest or conviction records may be considered where permitted by law. Reasonable accommodations are available during the hiring process for candidates with disabilities or disabled veterans, and applicants who need support should let their recruiter know.
