Job description
About Project Slingshot
Project Slingshot is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to ending factory farming. It achieves this by revealing the deceit, cruelty, and influence of Big Agriculture through disruptive campaigns that capture public attention and build unstoppable momentum for change. Their activities include daily social media content, collaborations with celebrities, documentaries, PR activations, websites, fundraising materials, and out-of-home (OOH) advertising campaigns.
The organization started in London and is now expanding across the US, starting with San Francisco and gradually moving city by city. The US core team, led by this role, will oversee all operations and executions across the country.
Role Overview
This is a founding senior leadership position responsible for establishing and growing Project Slingshot's presence in the US. The role involves adapting a proven campaign model to American culture and building a robust US team. Within the first six months, the person in this position will hire the initial staff, secure OOH and transit advertising spaces in the Bay Area, customize creative content and tone for the US market in collaboration with senior leadership, and execute the first campaign launch in San Francisco, with plans to expand further.
This role also involves full ownership of the US campaign budget, including planning, allocation across media, production, team, and agency costs, and accountability for deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute the US campaign strategy, beginning with the San Francisco launch and continuation campaigns.
- Recruit, manage, and mentor a small but high-performing US team, fostering a culture that is bold, supportive, and impact-focused.
- Oversee media placement strategies across OOH, transit, digital, and podcasts; negotiate with media owners within the US; and ensure efficient budget use.
- Adapt Project Slingshot's creative materials, messaging, and tone for the US audience using proper message testing rather than assuming direct translation from London.
- Develop local presence and partnerships by engaging with conferences, events, and the Bay Area tech and philanthropic communities to provide a relatable human face alongside advertising efforts.
- Support earned media initiatives, influencer outreach, and celebrity partnerships in collaboration with executive communications leadership.
- Collaborate with Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) leadership to measure impact, including shifts in awareness, responses from decision-makers, and campaign-driven conversations and commitments.
- Serve as the senior US spokesperson for Project Slingshot with funders, movement partners, and the media.
- Identify potential risks, obtain necessary approvals promptly, ensure timely campaign launches, and anticipate future capacity and capability needs for growth.
Candidate Profile
Project Slingshot values capability and sound judgment over prior animal advocacy experience and welcomes perspectives from diverse sectors. Ideal candidates typically have the following:
- Proven success managing large-scale integrated brand, political, cultural, or advocacy campaigns at a rapid pace.
- Deep familiarity with Bay Area culture or the ability to quickly gain an understanding of what resonates locally.
- Experience building and leading high-performing teams from the ground up.
- Strong creative instincts with confidence to make decisions about tone, humor, and style, combined with openness to test and refine messaging.
- Comfort with managing budgets, strategic planning, and delivering measurable outcomes efficiently.
- Experience engaging with founders, funders, and senior media stakeholders, with the ability to build influence in new environments.
- Passion for the mission to end factory farming; while veganism is not required, willingness to publicly support this cause is essential.
Success Metrics
- By six months: Successful launch of the San Francisco campaign, recruitment and effective performance of the US founding team, and recognition of Slingshot within Bay Area tech and philanthropic circles.
- By twelve months: Clear and ambitious US campaign strategy in place; ongoing impactful campaigns generating attention and momentum; cost-effective and well-coordinated advertising; thriving US team with defined priorities; strong connections across the wider US movement and plans to expand in other cities.
Practical Details
- Location: Preferred presence in the San Francisco Bay Area with regular city visits and initial and future travel to London and other US cities.
- Reporting to: Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder & President.
- Scope: Focus on campaigns, marketing, and team leadership; legal, finance, and entity operations are handled by a separate US operations team.
- Salary: Dependent on region. Ranges are $130,000-$150,000 for San Francisco Bay Area or NYC Metropolitan Area; $120,000-$140,000 for other high-cost metros; and $110,000-$125,000 for other US locations.
- Benefits: Paid holidays and time off, medical insurance options.
- Start Date: Immediate hire preferred.
