Job Overview

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is looking for a Transport Maintenance Crew Chief to lead a team of maintenance technicians and equipment operators. This role involves supervising and coordinating skilled transportation maintenance tasks while assisting in managing the maintenance section. It requires independent work, but complex or unusual issues should be referred to a supervisor. The position involves readiness to respond to emergencies as needed and frequent contact with private entities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support emergency response during accidents or adverse weather by sanding bridges and roads, posting warning signs, and coordinating crew efforts.
  • Assist in the administration and operational oversight of the maintenance section.
  • Estimate and procure materials and equipment required for maintenance assignments.
  • Conduct inspections of road conditions en route to and from job sites, reporting issues to supervisors.
  • Maintain detailed records of material and equipment use as well as employee time tracking.
  • Operate light and heavy maintenance equipment safely.
  • Supervise maintenance inspectors and sign technicians in assigned tasks.
  • Perform equipment maintenance and repairs, and provide training to crew members on equipment operation.
  • Act as lead worker by allocating daily assignments, offering technical guidance, reporting progress to supervisors, contributing to team members’ career development discussions, and approving leave while ensuring coverage.
  • Fulfill other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in roadway maintenance. Relevant college education or technical training can substitute on a year-for-year basis.
  • Licenses: Valid driver’s license with Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including an "N" endorsement required at application.

Competencies and Skills

  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, equipment, and materials in intermodal transportation maintenance and construction.
  • Familiarity with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Understanding of incident management and inventory control procedures.
  • Ability to operate various light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Skilled at calculating material and labor estimates, expenses, and technical survey or engineering calculations.
  • Leadership skills including assigning, monitoring, and reviewing team work.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization capabilities.
  • Effective communication, both oral and written.
  • Maintaining safe work environments and relationships.
  • Problem-solving abilities and sound decision-making supporting business goals.
  • Delegation skills with accountability for tasks.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

  • Exposure to varying weather, temperature extremes (below 32°F and above 100°F), noise, vibration, moving vehicles and machinery, hazardous conditions, and requirement to wear protective gear (respirator, hard hat, etc.).
  • Medium physical work: lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally and carrying 25 lbs frequently.
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, walking, balancing on various surfaces.
  • Good hearing, vision for operating vehicles and equipment, and verbal communication abilities.

Employment Conditions

  • Position is physically demanding and requires passing a pre-employment physical.
  • Safety impact role requiring pre-employment and random drug testing; medical marijuana use is not a valid defense for positive tests.
  • Must be able to report within 45 minutes of emergency notification on a 24-hour basis.
