Job description

About the Opportunity

South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, in partnership with NHS England, offers a two-year training program in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) targeted at individuals providing care within secondary inpatient and community mental health services. This role is designed for candidates focused on complex emotional regulation and interpersonal challenges. Successful completion of the NHSE-funded training and earning DBT therapist accreditation enables progression to a permanent Band 7 psychological therapist position.

Candidate Profile

Applicants must possess relevant professional qualifications and registration, such as Practitioner Psychologist, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Psychotherapist, or Mental Health Nurse. This post complies with the NHS England two-year funding rule, which restricts funding eligibility for other training programs during this period.

Role Details

This fixed-term, two-year post leads to a permanent psychological therapist role once the postgraduate diploma and accreditation are completed. While undergoing intensive training, post-holders will administer formal psychological treatments to clients with complex issues, ensuring clinical effectiveness of the interventions applied.

Experience and Skills Required

Candidates should demonstrate practical experience working with individuals facing mental health challenges and show capability in establishing secure and constructive therapeutic relationships. Superior verbal and written communication skills are essential. Working with diverse cultural backgrounds and age groups, including the use of interpreters where needed, is expected. Commitment to equal opportunities and anti-racism is fundamental.

Training Commitment

Attendance is required for 70 to 80 training days over two years, including weekly sessions and intensive 5-day blocks. Post-holders must successfully complete academic requirements and apply learned skills under supervision.

Local Context

Lambeth is a diverse inner London borough with a population around 350,000, characterized by social challenges including unemployment, poor housing, and child poverty, alongside areas of affluence. It experiences higher-than-average mental health morbidity and complexity.

Organization

The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre, emphasizing innovation and effective, outcome-driven interventions. Services cover Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham, Croydon, and specialized treatments for clients nationwide. The trust prioritizes staff development through CPD and collaborative ties with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.

Additional Information

This full-time role incorporates both remote and in-person responsibilities. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
