Job description
Role overview
Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust is hiring a Trainee Clinical Coding Officer for Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby. This is a development role for someone who wants to learn clinical coding within a busy NHS setting and progress toward a Band 3 Clinical Coding Officer position after successful training.
What the role involves
You will train as part of the clinical coding team, supporting the recording of inpatient and day-case episodes using ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classification systems. The role focuses on turning clinical information into accurate coded data for operational, audit, epidemiology, case-mix analysis and performance reporting purposes.
- Review, interpret, abstract and validate clinical and procedural information.
- Convert episode details accurately into the required coding classifications.
- Handle telephone enquiries and resolve queries.
- Find and retrieve health records when needed.
- Work with clinicians and liaise with both internal and external contacts.
Person profile
The trust is looking for someone who is motivated, eager to learn, dependable and efficient, with strong people skills and the physical ability to manage the demands of the job. You should be able to plan and prioritise daily work, stay composed under pressure, and adapt well to a fast-moving and sometimes high-pressure environment. The successful applicant should be comfortable working independently as well as contributing to a team.
Training and progression
After completing the formal training programme, you will be expected to independently abstract, interpret, validate, analyse, record and translate clinical information into the appropriate standard classifications. On successful completion of training, there is an opportunity to progress into a Band 3 Clinical Coding Officer post.
