Job description
About the company
Sims Limited is a worldwide recycling and circular solutions business that began in Australia in 1917. The company supports decarbonisation by providing recycled materials and repurposed products that help reduce waste and protect the environment. It operates more than 155 facilities in 13 countries and employs over 4,100 people globally. As a publicly listed company, it offers a stable environment, clear processes, and opportunities to grow within the business.
Role overview
Sims is hiring an entry-level Trade Assistant / Maintenance team member for its Christchurch site. Reporting to the National Engineering Manager, you will carry out practical maintenance work on plant and equipment to help keep yard operations running efficiently. This position is available for an immediate start and is well suited to someone who enjoys mechanical work and using tools in a hands-on setting.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks to reduce breakdowns and keep equipment operating effectively.
- Keep clear, accurate records of maintenance work completed.
- Support the production team to maintain smooth day-to-day operations.
- Work in line with site expectations for safety, environmental care, and quality.
What you should bring
This role suits someone with some prior exposure to labouring, production, or maintenance-related work, especially where they have worked alongside operations or engineering teams. The company is looking for a person who pays close attention to detail, takes safety and quality seriously, and communicates well when working alone or with others. A basic understanding of engineering processes will be helpful.
Preferred experience
It would be an advantage if you hold a forklift licence or Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) certification. Experience working with heavy machinery, a solid understanding of engineering workflows, or a pre-trade qualification would also help you stand out, although these are not essential.
Benefits
- Practical training and paid opportunities to develop your career, including exposure to specialised recycling systems and potential apprenticeship pathways.
- Opportunities to learn new technical skills such as welding, oxy cutting, and conveyor operations.
- Competitive pay with overtime available.
- Regular Monday to Friday work with no rotating shifts.
Additional information
Sims is committed to building a safer, more responsible recycling business and encourages a zero-harm workplace. The company values diversity, equal opportunity, accountability, transparency, innovation, purpose-driven work, and a positive team culture. It also supports employees who contribute to the communities and environment where the business operates.
Application note
Applicants should submit a cover letter and resume.
