Role overview

The Town of Sunset Beach is seeking a Town Administrator to lead the municipality’s day-to-day operations and serve as the chief executive officer for Town activities. Reporting to the Mayor and Town Council, this role is responsible for ensuring that Town business is carried out in line with applicable municipal, state, and federal laws, regulations, and guidance.

Core duties

This position covers the full scope of executive municipal management, including budgeting, planning, organizing, coordinating, directing, and administering Town programs and services. The Administrator also provides policy advice, supports department heads and staff, and helps maintain productive relationships with civic organizations, intergovernmental partners, and internal teams.

Leadership expectations

The successful candidate is expected to work with a high level of autonomy, initiative, and sound judgment, with performance measured by outcomes. The Town is looking for someone who is community-minded, highly service-oriented, and committed to public service. Building genuine relationships with stakeholders inside and outside the organization is essential, as is a clear commitment to growth, diversity, and equity.

Required background

Applicants should have a degree from an accredited college or university in public administration, business administration, or a related discipline, along with at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in local government management. An equivalent mix of education and management experience may also be considered.

Preferred qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who hold a master’s degree in Public Administration, have completed the Municipal Administration Program through the UNC School of Government or a comparable institution, or have direct experience as a Town/City Manager or Assistant Town Administrator/Manager. Familiarity with the particular issues facing a coastal town will also be an advantage.
