Job description

Role Overview

The City of Largo is looking for a visionary Police Chief to guide a growing department through continued modernization, stronger community relationships, and sustained operational excellence. This leadership position is centered on advancing contemporary policing practices while ensuring the department remains responsive to community needs and long-term city priorities.

What the Role Involves

Reporting to the City Manager, the Police Chief is accountable for the overall leadership, performance, and direction of the Largo Police Department. The role requires setting a clear strategic direction for policing services so they align with the city’s goals, public expectations, and sustainability objectives.

  • Create and carry out a public safety strategy that supports the City’s strategic plan and reflects the findings of the Police Operational Evaluation.
  • Oversee all police operations and monitor departmental performance to maintain effective service delivery.
  • Lead, coach, and motivate a high-performing workforce.
  • Build and maintain strong internal and regional partnerships.
  • Promote innovation in policing through technology, data use, and alternate service delivery approaches.
  • Strengthen trust, accountability, wellness, and continuous improvement across the department.

Experience and Qualifications

Candidates should bring a strong background in law enforcement leadership, along with the education and credentials needed to succeed in a chief-level role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in a law-enforcement-related field.
  • 10 years of demonstrated law enforcement experience, including 5 years at the rank of major or higher.
  • Valid police officer certification, or the ability to qualify for it.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $175,000 to $185,000.
