Position Overview
The Faculty of Engineering & Science at the University of Greenwich is seeking a meticulous and safety-focused Technician specializing in Scientific Goods In. This permanent role is based at the Medway Campus and involves coordinating the procurement, receipt, safe storage, tracking, and internal distribution of scientific and hazardous materials within the Faculty.
About the Faculty and University
The Faculty operates across two campuses—Medway in Kent and Greenwich in London—offering STEM education combined with research and work placements. From August 2026, the University of Greenwich will form the London and South-East (LASE) University Group alongside the University of Kent, augmenting collaboration and ambition across institutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the central coordinator for handling scientific and hazardous goods entering the Faculty.
- Operate and maintain the chemical inventory system (LabCup), overseeing pre-purchase validations ensuring adherence to safety protocols and compliance with COSHH regulations.
- Ensure only authorized and properly trained staff procure hazardous chemicals, with suitable risk assessments, storage, and disposal arrangements.
- Collaborate closely with the HazMat Technician, Health and Safety Services, and Procurement teams to maintain safe and cost-efficient chemical management.
- Assist with Science Stores operations, support Finance-related Goods In processes, and undertake day-to-day Goods In activities autonomously within set procedures.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Proven experience working in laboratory environments with chemical and/or biological materials.
- Strong knowledge of laboratory safety practices, particularly COSHH and hazardous chemical handling, storage, and disposal.
- Exceptional organisational skills with high attention to detail and precision in record-keeping.
- Ability to work independently and flexibly without direct supervision.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to liaise effectively with multiple stakeholders.
