Nabu Casa is the organization behind Home Assistant, the largest free and open-source smart home platform serving over two million households worldwide. Founded in 2018 by Home Assistant's original creators and core contributors, Nabu Casa focuses on ensuring the project's sustainability and preventing burnout. The company operates with core principles of privacy, choice, and sustainability embedded across its architecture and community. It is a profitable, investor-free entity providing official Home Assistant products and services, where revenue from subscriptions and sales directly funds ongoing development of Home Assistant and related Open Home projects.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Technical Writer to manage the complete documentation experience for Nabu Casa hardware and cloud products. This key role entails creating accessible, precise, and user-friendly documentation for a worldwide audience ranging from beginners performing first-time setups to developers requiring detailed API and integration guides. The Technical Writer will collaborate closely with engineers to convey complex technical information clearly, minimizing support requests and enabling user self-sufficiency. This position demands earning the trust of both technical and user communities through accuracy and clarity.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full ownership of documentation for Nabu Casa Hardware and Cloud, ensuring it is accurate, current, and easily discoverable.
- Plan and produce documentation for new features, integrations, and releases aligned with product development cycles.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to research and validate technical content, easing the documentation load on engineers.
- Continuously audit and enhance existing documentation by identifying obsolete content, addressing gaps, and refining structure and tone.
- Establish and enforce documentation standards, style guides, and templates to maintain consistency and ease of community contributions.
- Respond to feedback from the community, support teams, and internal stakeholders to prioritize documentation improvements that impact user success.
- Contribute to developer-focused content including API references, integration instructions, and contributor guides supporting the Open Home Foundation community and partners.
- Monitor documentation metrics such as support ticket trends and community input, generating regular reports.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated strong technical writing abilities with a portfolio containing developer or product documentation.
- Proficient in reading and comprehending code, including Python, YAML, and REST APIs, to produce accurate technical materials autonomously.
- Solid understanding of smart home hardware and electronics, capable of independent basic troubleshooting.
- Experience with documentation workflows using tools like Git, Markdown, and static site generators such as MkDocs or Docusaurus.
- Highly self-motivated with the ability to independently identify documentation needs without supervision.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills to efficiently extract technical insights from busy engineers.
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with Home Assistant or comparable open-source/self-hosted software projects.
- Experience maintaining community-driven documentation with contributions from external authors.
- Methodical approach to auditing extensive documentation and prioritizing systematic improvements.
- Comfortable working asynchronously in a fully remote, distributed team environment.
Benefits and Work Environment
Nabu Casa operates as a completely remote company employing staff worldwide, providing local country-compliant salaried employment. The position is full-time at 40 hours weekly, with flexible hours aimed at at least three hours of daily overlap among team members. You will report directly to the Vice President of Commercial.
- Five weeks (25 days) of paid vacation annually.
- Fourteen days of paid sick leave if local law treats these as unpaid.
- Six weeks paid and six weeks unpaid parental leave within the first year after childbirth.
- Initial budget for work hardware, with ownership after three years.
- Annual smart home technology budget to keep current with innovations.
- Annual educational budget for professional growth.
