Role overview
This role focuses on serving shoppers and coworkers, backing store sales efforts, and completing assigned tasks while delivering a high standard of customer care.
Key duties
- Welcome customers and team members, provide helpful support, and contribute to selling efforts using the TEAM approach: thank the customer, engage with the customer and/or pet, recommend suitable products or services, and leave a positive impression.
- Keep regular attendance and remain dependable, flexible, and ready to adjust to changing business needs.
- Work assigned schedules, including different shifts, days, nights, weekends, and overtime when required.
- Operate the cash register and computer systems while following approved cash-handling procedures.
- Restock recovered merchandise and help maintain accurate product presentation.
- Take part in required freight handling activities.
- Complete planograms, including merchandising, resets, and set changes.
- Assemble merchandise as needed.
- Perform cleaning and janitorial tasks to keep the store presentable and safe.
- Carry out price updates and markdowns.
- Help customers load their purchases.
- Protect the health and safety of live animals, including cleaning and maintaining holding tanks and providing care when needed.
- Complete all records and documentation related to job tasks.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by management.
Required qualifications
No prior experience is required, though retail experience and knowledge of pets or live animals is strongly preferred. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not mandatory. Regardless of education level, the candidate must be able to read, write, and count accurately.
Preferred skills and abilities
Strong familiarity with pet food, pet products, and live animal care is highly desirable. The role also calls for clear communication, practical problem-solving, basic computer literacy, and the ability to work with others respectfully while resolving issues ethically and with limited conflict.
Working conditions
The job is generally performed indoors in a moderately noisy environment. Floors and outdoor surfaces are typically hard surfaces such as concrete or asphalt, and lighting and temperature conditions are adequate. Shifts vary by store, but are usually at least 4 hours and may go beyond 8 hours. The role also requires supporting a safe and productive workplace and following company safety training and guidelines.
Physical requirements
- This is a non-sedentary position that requires frequent movement throughout the store and outdoor areas.
- The team member must be able to operate job-related equipment safely and effectively while providing excellent service.
- The role may require occasional lifting or reaching overhead.
- Frequent standing, kneeling, twisting, crouching, squatting, bending, stooping, and climbing ladders are expected.
- The employee must be able to move through the store for the entire shift and access all areas, including the sales floor, side lot, stockroom, and register area.
- Constant use of store equipment such as a computer, cash register, and related tools is required.
- Accurate reading, writing, and counting are necessary for documentation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are needed to interact effectively with customers and coworkers.
- The team member must be able to process merchandise and information through the point-of-sale system.
- Ability to move and transfer live animals, equipment, and merchandise weighing up to 50 pounds is required.
- Successful completion of all required training and certifications is necessary.
- Lifting more than 50 pounds may be required.
