Job description

Role overview

Federation Council is seeking a dependable, practical Team Leader Grader to support Engineering Services from Corowa, New South Wales, while working across the wider council area. This is a permanent full-time position offering 76 hours per fortnight, a regular fortnightly RDO, and scope to progress your career.

If you are an experienced grader operator ready to move into a leadership role, this opportunity lets you take ownership of roadworks delivery while guiding a small crew that helps keep the community connected.

What the role involves

You will split your time between operating heavy plant and leading daily field activities. The position focuses on building, maintaining, and finishing local roads to a high standard, while also keeping safety, quality, and productivity on track.

  • Direct and coordinate the day-to-day work of the team, including contractors, traffic control personnel, watering, and rolling activities.
  • Run the council grader and other plant in line with manufacturer requirements.
  • Construct sealed and unsealed roads, set levels accurately, and finish pavements ready for bitumen sealing.
  • Put project-specific plans into action, covering WHS, quality, and environmental obligations.
  • Carry out site checks, risk reviews, and pre-start safety inspections.
  • Perform routine field repairs on the grader and associated plant as needed.
  • Maintain accurate timesheets, plant records, and daily work logs, and complete final sign-offs.
  • Plan staff and equipment usage so the Works Program is delivered on schedule.
  • Support the training and upskilling of other team members.

Essential criteria

Applications should clearly address the following requirements:

  • Either a Grader Operator Statement of Competency or substantial, proven hands-on experience in grader operations.
  • A current Medium Rigid licence, plus either the experience or the willingness to upgrade to a Heavy Combination licence within six months.
  • Current NSW traffic management qualifications, including Traffic Controller and Implement Traffic Control Plans certificates, along with a valid White Card.
  • Solid experience in road maintenance and construction on both sealed and unsealed roads, including the ability to set levels accurately on site.
  • Strong understanding of WHS practices and the ability to foster a proactive safety culture.
  • Demonstrated capability to supervise civil works while operating plant and working cooperatively with others.

Benefits and conditions

  • Enjoy a better work-life balance with a regular fortnightly RDO.
  • Long service leave becomes available after 5 years of employment.
  • The role is covered by the Local Government (State) Award and council employment policies and conditions.
  • There are genuine opportunities for progression, training, and ongoing skill development.
  • You will join a supportive and inclusive workplace where your work makes a direct difference to the local community.

How to apply

Submit a cover letter explaining how you meet the listed criteria, together with a resume that outlines your employment history, qualifications, and skills. Applications must be received by 4.00pm on Thursday 16 July 2026.
