Job description

Overview

Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space technology company providing launch services, spacecraft design, manufacturing, satellite components, and more, aimed at expanding space accessibility. Their Electron rocket is one of the most frequently launched rockets in the U.S., with over 230 satellites deployed, and they are developing the medium-lift reusable Neutron launch vehicle for larger missions.

The Neutron team is charged with the design, testing, and deployment of the new large rocket Neutron, including its engines, launch pads, and test sites. This role is based at the Auckland site and involves leading a thermofluid analysis team.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead detailed thermofluid and CFD analyses on launch vehicles and space systems, encompassing hypersonic and subsonic aerodynamics, internal fluid system flows (both compressible and incompressible), and comprehensive heat transfer processes such as conduction, convection, and radiation.
  • Collaborate extensively with design and test engineers to iteratively improve designs, analyze flight and ground test data to validate performance, and detect anomalies through fundamental physics and data interpretation.
  • Guide technical strategy by performing peer reviews, defining analysis methodologies, documenting best practices, and establishing qualification test parameters, while facilitating global team knowledge sharing.
  • Foster team development through coaching junior analysts on technical standards, organizing training, implementing performance management strategies, and exemplifying professional conduct and constructive team interactions.

Required Qualifications

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field with at least 5 years' professional experience in aerospace, automotive, or marine domains emphasizing physics-based problem solving.
  • Advanced proficiency in CFD and thermal modeling using industry tools such as Fluent, CFX, STAR-CCM+, Thermal Desktop, THERMICA, or NX SST, with a demonstrated ability to accurately validate and document complex simulations.
  • Strong technical skills including familiarity with NX CAD/Teamcenter or similar software, sensor selection, data processing, and competence in Python programming using libraries like numpy, pandas, scipy, and matplotlib.
  • Proven ability to deliver results under pressure with effective communication skills to build strong cross-functional relationships and produce clear written and presentation materials.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Background in structural analysis and mechanics to complement thermofluid expertise.
  • Familiarity with aerospace industry standards such as MIL-STD-1540, GSFC-STD-7000, ECSS-E-HB-32, or NASA-STD-5001.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including conventional machining and additive manufacturing methods, to enhance design-for-manufacturability considerations.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and supporting their technical growth through structured training and coaching.

Work Environment and Expectations

Rocket Lab pursues a mission-driven culture underpinned by hard work, innovation, teamwork, and resilience. This role demands adaptability to tight deadlines and high-pressure scenarios with a collaborative and respectful team ethos.

Compliance and Eligibility Information

U.S. candidates must meet ITAR compliance requirements, being either U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, or eligible for the necessary government authorizations.

For New Zealand candidates, eligibility to access regulated equipment and data is contingent upon citizenship of specified countries or compliance with ITAR regulations. Background checks including nationality verification will be conducted prior to employment offers.

Rocket Lab is committed to equal opportunity employment without discrimination on any protected grounds and provides accessible accommodations during the hiring process for candidates with disabilities.
