Job description

About the role

Johnson’s Dry Cleaners, part of Timpson Group Limited, is looking for an experienced tailor to join its St Albans branch network. This is a permanent full-time position suited to someone who enjoys hands-on garment work and delivering a friendly customer experience. The role involves supporting the Area Manager and nearby branches with repair and alteration services, and you should be comfortable working across multiple Johnsons locations.

Pay and hours

The starting pay is £12.75 per hour, rising to £12.80 per hour after a successful trial period. There is also an uncapped weekly bonus opportunity. The role is for 40 hours across 5 days, which includes weekends, and overtime may be available once you are trained.

Key duties

You will handle a range of garment repair and alteration tasks, while also helping customers in the branch with fittings and discussions about their needs. The job also includes carrying out a daily act of kindness for a customer or colleague.

  • Alter and repair garments of many kinds, including shortening and lengthening items
  • Take garments in or let them out to achieve the correct fit
  • Replace damaged or broken zippers
  • Complete other general repair and alteration work as needed
  • Shorten curtains when required
  • Assist customers in branch and support fittings
  • Work closely with the Area Manager and local branches to provide repair support
  • Carry out one act of kindness each day for a customer or colleague

What the company offers

Colleague wellbeing and engagement are treated as a priority, with an annual happiness index used to understand how the team is doing. In addition to base pay, employees can earn weekly performance bonuses and access a wide range of benefits.

  • Free holiday homes
  • Uncapped, achievable bonuses
  • Discount card offering up to 90% off for colleagues and up to 25% off for friends and family
  • One extra day off on your birthday
  • Paid leave for a child’s first day at school
  • Annual salary reviews
  • Regular social events
  • Weekly £1000 lottery draws
  • Strong promotion opportunities
  • Ongoing training to build skills
  • £100 wedding bonus
  • Mental health support, free flu jabs, and a 24-hour helpline
  • Additional benefits beyond those listed

What they are looking for

The employer places more weight on personality than formal qualifications. They want someone who is positive, approachable, confident, a strong communicator, and motivated to do well.

Requirements

  • Skilled in sewing and tailoring methods
  • Good understanding of fabrics and how garments are constructed
  • Strong customer-facing skills
  • Careful and accurate with alterations
  • Able to solve problems when challenges arise
  • Good at managing time and workload
  • Experience working with different types of clothing
  • Previous background in retail or alteration work
