Job description
Role overview
RAC is hiring a Superflex Roadside Mechanic to support members across the Reading area with roadside assistance. This position is designed for someone who works well in a changing environment and enjoys helping drivers get moving again.
Pay and working pattern
The role offers a basic salary of £50,669 per year, with the chance to reach up to £57,000 through bonuses and overtime. You will average 40 hours per week over the year. Your rota is shared seven days ahead of time, and your specific core hours are confirmed three days before each shift.
Shifts can run between 06:00 and 02:00 and may include early starts, late finishes, weekends, and bank holidays.
Work location
You will be part of the Reading cluster, covering nearby places such as Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell, Henley-on-Thames, Crowthorne, and Sandhurst. Work is arranged locally so you can begin and end your day from home while focusing on helping members in your area.
What the role involves
- Respond to roadside breakdowns and get vehicles back on the road wherever possible.
- Use diagnostic and electrical knowledge to identify faults and decide on the right repair.
- Handle a variety of call-outs, from technical issues to flat tyres and flat batteries.
- Look after your assigned van, stock, tools, and reporting with care and accuracy.
- Represent RAC professionally while supporting members in stressful situations.
What you need
You should have a Level 2 light vehicle maintenance qualification, or an equivalent background, along with proven experience in technical, electrical, and diagnostic work. A customer-first mindset is essential, as is a full UK driving licence.
The job also requires flexibility to respond at short notice and a willingness to travel, including overnight stays if needed.
Support and equipment
RAC provides the equipment you need from day one, including your own van, fuel card, uniform, essential tools, and diagnostic kit.
Benefits
- Annual base pay of £50,669, with total earnings potential up to £57,000.
- Free participation in the colleague share scheme.
- Free RAC Ultimate breakdown cover from day one.
- Access to a car salary sacrifice scheme, including electric vehicle options after 12 months.
- 23 days of holiday plus bank holidays, rising to 25 days with service.
- Pension contributions matched up to 6.5% and life cover worth up to 4 times salary, or 10 times with flex benefits.
- 24/7 confidential wellbeing support for you and your family.
- Discounts on tools, technology, holidays, and other purchases through the Orange Savings portal.
