Job description

About the Role

The School of Alternative Learning Settings (SALS) is forming a pool of Student Support Officers to fill both permanent and fixed-term full-time and part-time positions. These opportunities are planned throughout the 2026 academic year and up until the end of Term 2, 2027, with appointments commencing anytime during this timeframe. The roles will be based in the North Metro region, specifically at Joondalup and West Perth campuses.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support Officers are integral to delivering responsive and effective support services for students. The position involves collaborating within a cohesive team to offer a social and emotional curriculum, contributing to the implementation and development of student support strategies and personalised programs. Officers may also be tasked with transporting students as part of their duties. Maintaining professional boundaries while adopting a student-centred approach is crucial to foster positive outcomes. Under supervision, they provide assistance in therapeutic crisis management and develop individualised de-escalation plans.

Candidate Profile

Ideal candidates possess experience in supporting student engagement, transitions, case management, and social-emotional learning development. They should have a background in student support and demonstrate current professional development or a willingness to undertake targeted training such as de-escalation techniques, team teaching, circle of courage practices, therapeutic crisis intervention, and trauma-informed approaches.

Additional Information

The role may require travel within Perth or to other SALS locations for professional learning, staff development, inductions, which could involve overnight stays and air travel. A valid Western Australian driver's license is also necessary and must be maintained throughout employment.

About SALS

Established in 2019 and becoming an independent school in 2022, SALS offers specialised programs for students exhibiting complex and challenging behaviours needing intensive, short-term intervention. These programs build social skills and self-regulation in supportive environments fostering lasting behavioural improvement. SALS has 13 locations across metropolitan and regional Western Australia, providing tailored educational programs that promote cultural responsiveness, student self-determination, and interpersonal connections. Access to specialists including paediatricians and clinical psychologists is available.

Inclusivity and Diversity Commitment

The Department is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and culturally responsive workforce that mirrors the diversity of the Western Australian community. Applications are encouraged from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, young people, individuals of varied sexualities and genders, persons with disabilities, and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Further information is available in the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Plan 2021-2025.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, permanent resident, or hold a valid visa with appropriate work rights for the appointment duration.
  • Obtain a valid Working With Children Check before commencing employment.
  • Consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and secure a Screening Clearance Number from the Department's Screening Unit prior to starting.

Additional eligibility and training requirements can be found in the accompanying Job Description Form (JDF).
