Job description

About the role

The New York Times Magazine is hiring a staff photo editor to shape and produce photography across multiple platforms. The position calls for strong editorial instincts, refined visual judgment, and the ability to thrive in a fast-moving, highly collaborative newsroom environment.

You will work across digital, print, mobile, and social formats, developing ideas and commissioning imagery that fits the magazine’s style and storytelling needs. A genuine interest in photography, journalism, visual narrative, and innovation is essential, along with experience working with photographers in the field and knowledge of photographers worldwide.

This is an in-office role based in New York with regular presence required in the office four days per week. Some remote flexibility may be available depending on departmental guidance.

What you will do

  • Conceptualize and develop photographic ideas for special issues, photo essays, and feature stories, with a strong emphasis on digital presentation and storytelling.
  • Commission, edit, and publish visuals across mobile, print, and social channels.
  • Maintain a consistently high photographic standard across a variety of genres and story types.
  • Collaborate closely with photo editors, writers, editors, and designers to deliver polished visual packages.
  • Search for, review, and license strong imagery from archives and stock sources when needed.
  • Apply sound journalistic judgment and uphold the organization’s commitment to truth, independence, and public understanding.
  • Report directly to the Director of Photography.

What we are looking for

  • At least 5 years of experience in a magazine or similar visual curation role.
  • Strong editorial judgment, including the ability to work with editors and legal teams on vetting, copyright, ethical, and legal questions.
  • Hands-on experience researching and sourcing existing photography.
  • Proven ability to produce visual work in deadline-driven, fast-paced environments.
  • Advanced familiarity with electronic image handling, digital tools, and related programs.
  • Broad interest in photographic genres, video, social media, and digitally innovative multimedia formats.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Experience with video production and editing is an advantage.
  • Strong visual taste and sharp news judgment.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when project timelines require it.
