About the role
Auckland Council is seeking a permanent Specialist Advisor for its Community Wellbeing team in the Central and East portfolio. Based in Central Auckland and supporting the Puketāpapa area, this position works closely with a wide range of communities, helping turn local aspirations and ideas into practical outcomes. The role centres on community-led development, strengthening community capability, and contributing to the Auckland Plan and Thriving Communities action plan.
You will build trusted relationships with community groups and stakeholders, act as a reliable partner, and help deliver meaningful results. The work is varied, impactful, and involves travel across the communities you support.
Working style and flexibility
- This is a hybrid position with a mix of home and office work.
- Flexible start and finish times are available.
- Occasional attendance at community events outside standard working hours is expected.
- You must hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence or be able to travel independently.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will help shape and deliver community-focused initiatives that address complex local challenges and strengthen outcomes for Auckland residents.
- Lead and contribute to work that responds to some of the most significant issues affecting Auckland communities.
- Provide well-informed, evidence-based guidance to support elected members and decision-makers.
- Operate in a space that values innovation, collaboration, and measurable impact.
About you
The ideal candidate is motivated by community work, works well with others, and is comfortable taking initiative. You will bring substantial experience in community development and a genuine desire to design and deliver innovative projects for diverse Auckland communities.
Experience and capability
- Strong background in community development and building community capability.
- Experience using community-led delivery approaches.
- Proven ability to build and manage effective relationships.
- Confidence working with diverse communities.
- Experience engaging with elected members.
- History of project managing collaborative, outcome-driven work programmes.
- Ability to work effectively in complex and uncertain environments.
- Experience providing strategic advice and influencing at multiple levels.
- Comfort working with a broad range of community and organisational stakeholders.

Salary and conditions
This is a band H role with a salary expected to be between NZ$100,000 and NZ$120,000 per year, depending on experience. The role is permanent and full-time.
