Job description

Opportunity overview

Auckland Council is looking for an experienced building professional to join its Field Surveying team in Albany as a Building Inspector. This position offers the chance to manage part of a varied inspection portfolio, work across the region, and make independent technical decisions while supporting a smooth experience for customers.

The role involves working with a broad mix of people from the development community, including builders, homeowners, architects, and developers. You will provide practical guidance on compliant building practices and help ensure inspections are carried out to the right legislative and safety standards.

What you will do

  • Carry out building inspections across your allocated area and assess work against building consents, the Building Code, BCA policies, and other legal requirements.
  • Use technical judgement to determine inspection outcomes and record decisions clearly and accurately.
  • Support customers by explaining Council processes and improving their understanding of the Building Code in a clear, timely, and service-oriented way.
  • Maintain reliable inspection records and apply well-reasoned decisions in line with compliance expectations.

About you

This opportunity suits someone with a strong background in building-related work and a solid grasp of building design, construction methods, structural integrity, the Building Code, and the Building Act. The ideal person combines technical depth with good communication, sound judgement, and a genuine customer focus.

You should be comfortable managing competing priorities, resolving issues constructively, and handling inspection and enforcement work with professionalism and high ethical standards.

Qualification and experience

  • A relevant qualification such as the National Diploma in Building Control Surveying, another recognised professional qualification accepted by IANZ, or a willingness to work toward the required qualification.
  • Previous experience in a comparable building compliance, regulatory, or inspection role would be beneficial.
  • At least 5 years of cumulative experience in a building-related regulatory environment.
  • Strong knowledge of the Building Act, the Building Code, and technical and structural aspects of building design and construction standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Strong customer service orientation and the ability to balance service with compliance requirements.
  • The ability to manage multiple demands and settle conflicts effectively.
  • A full, clean New Zealand driver’s licence for travel to inspection sites.

What is offered

  • Flexible working arrangements, including a hybrid setup.
  • The option to purchase an extra week of leave.
  • Employer KiwiSaver contributions on top of base salary.
  • A supportive environment with training, guidance, and opportunities for professional autonomy.
  • A workplace focused on wellbeing, continuous improvement, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Additional information

The salary range for this position is NZD 90,000 to NZD 100,000 per year, depending on skills and experience.
