Role overview
This is a hands-on shepherd position based at Haycocks Station in the Mavora Valley. It suits someone who enjoys practical farm work, wants variety in their day, and is keen to develop further within a small, supportive team.
Location
The farm is located about 40 km from Te Anau and roughly 1.5 hours from Invercargill or Queenstown.
What the job involves
- Managing livestock and pasture, along with supporting animal health.
- Assisting with feed planning in coordination with the Stock Manager and Farm Manager.
- Carrying out general maintenance work around the farm, including fencing.
- Keeping accurate records and following environmental compliance requirements.
About the farm and employer
Pāmu Landcorp Farming Limited is a State-Owned Enterprise operating more than 110 farms throughout New Zealand. Its focus is on delivering innovative and sustainable agricultural solutions for future generations.
Haycocks Station covers 6,242 effective hectares and runs around 39,000 stock units, including 5,500 red deer hinds, 14,000 sheep, and 1,900 Angus breeding cows. The property includes 3,000 hectares of hill country and 3,242 hectares of flat to rolling land.
What you should bring
The ideal applicant has a real interest in farming, stock work, and working with dogs, and is keen to keep learning while moving forward in their career. You should be someone who values animal welfare, works well with others, and can handle day-to-day tasks in a well-organised and dependable way.
You also need to be comfortable using farm technology or willing to learn, maintain clear communication, and take a proactive approach to health and safety as well as protecting farm assets.
Eligibility and compliance
Applicants must have a valid restricted or full driver licence, be available for an in-person interview, and have unrestricted legal rights to work in New Zealand. People on temporary work visas cannot be considered for permanent positions.
The successful candidate will also need to pass a drug and alcohol screening and a criminal background check before appointment.
