Job description
About the role
Bank of New Zealand is hiring a permanent, full-time Senior Technical Specialist in Wellington. The role sits within a highly operational environment focused on the bank’s core messaging platforms, especially IBM MQ. The expectation is not only to keep these systems stable, but to actively improve them through better automation, reliability, and modern support practices.
This position follows a hybrid working pattern, with three days in the office and two days available for flexible work.
What you will do
- Take ownership of IBM MQ platforms in production and provide day-to-day support.
- Investigate and resolve incidents across both distributed systems and mainframe environments.
- Introduce automation to reduce repetitive manual work and strengthen reliability.
- Partner with engineers and product teams to deliver service enhancements and improvements.
- Continuously lift platform performance, resilience, and ease of support.
Experience and technical background
The role calls for at least 4 years of experience in the technology industry, along with strong practical knowledge of IBM MQ. Experience with iSeries and/or z/OS environments is useful, as is solid grounding in Linux and infrastructure fundamentals.
Applicants should also bring experience in DevOps and CI/CD environments, including tools such as Jenkins, Ansible, Terraform, and containers. A strong scripting and automation mindset is essential, with hands-on use of Bash, PowerShell, or similar tools. Familiarity with AWS is preferred, along with a good understanding of networking basics.
Other valued experience includes working in Agile teams with a product-oriented mindset, managing incidents and production issues end to end, exposure to Infrastructure as Code and modern platform practices, and experience in technology operations such as monitoring and alerting. The role also involves delivering small to medium initiatives independently, documenting systems clearly, and sharing knowledge across teams.
Success attributes
The right person will naturally look for ways to remove manual effort and modernise the way work is done. They will be comfortable operating across both legacy and modern platforms, take full ownership of problems through to resolution, and stay pragmatic with a strong focus on outcomes. Curiosity, initiative, and the ability to build effective working relationships across teams are also important.
Before you apply
This is a practical engineering position with genuine accountability. You will be expected to own issues, improve systems, and push automation forward rather than simply maintain existing processes.
If most of your background is in GUI-based operations work and does not involve scripting or automation, this role may not be the best fit.
Application information
Applications close on Thursday 25 June 2026. Submissions may be reviewed as they are received, and the vacancy could close earlier than the advertised date.
