Job description

Role overview

New Zealand Customs Service is seeking a Senior Insights Lead to turn workforce and people data into practical insights that support strategic choices. In this permanent full-time position at the Auckland Customhouse, you will help translate complex information into clear recommendations that influence future direction and business decisions.

What you will do

In this role, you will work with the Senior Workforce and Data Analyst to examine data across the employee journey, spot meaningful patterns, and convert findings into actions that can guide People and Capability. You will also collaborate with the Payroll and Reporting team to keep information aligned, while focusing on higher-level insight rather than routine reporting.

What you bring

You should be confident using data to tell a story, present information visually, and build insights from workforce or organisational datasets. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving ability, and the skill to make complex data understandable for different audiences are important. You will also need to work well with stakeholders and contribute effectively in a collaborative environment.

Qualifications and suitability

A relevant tertiary background in areas such as Analytics, Human Resources, Business Systems, or a closely related field is preferred.

Working at Customs

Customs aims to be a place where people feel they belong and are supported to meet future challenges. The organisation values personal growth, wellbeing, and job satisfaction, and offers training, formal learning, leadership development, movement across different roles, supportive teams, flexible working within operational needs, discounted health insurance, and free on-site gyms in some locations. Employees also receive three service holidays in addition to four weeks of annual leave.

Security and eligibility requirements

To work for Customs, applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or a New Zealand permanent resident who meets the stated residency conditions. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an Organisational Security clearance and the required clearance level. A clean police record is required, and the role also requires passing a drug test. Background history must be verifiable and suitable for assessment by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service for a higher-level security clearance recommendation.

Application process

Applicants should submit a current CV and cover letter through the online application process. Applications sent directly by email are not accepted. If you have questions about the role, you may contact Suzanne Leahy, Senior Recruitment Advisor, at Suzanne.Leahy@customs.govt.nz. Customs is handling recruitment internally and is not working with recruitment agencies for this vacancy. The application deadline is 11pm on Thursday 2 July 2026.

Equal opportunity and flexible working

New Zealand Customs Service is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal employment opportunities. It welcomes applications from people who meet the role requirements and is open to discussing flexible working arrangements within operational requirements.
