Senior Food Technologist

Role overview

The Senior Food Technologist will lead food product creation, enhancement, and market launch efforts within the Research & Development, Product Innovation, and Quality & Compliance functions. Based in Navi Mumbai, this position reports to the Head of R&D, Technical Director, or Chief Operating Officer, depending on the organization structure.

This role is central to developing new offerings, improving existing formulations, strengthening product quality, extending shelf life, and ensuring that all work aligns with food safety, quality, and regulatory expectations. It also requires close coordination with internal teams to support technical problem-solving and commercial growth.

Key responsibilities

The role covers the full product development lifecycle, from concept through commercialization. It includes creating new formulations, refining recipes for performance and cost efficiency, and supporting scale-up from trials to factory production.

The incumbent will conduct product trials, pilot plant runs, and manufacturing validations, while also tracking market trends, ingredients, and technologies that can support innovation. Strong applied knowledge of food chemistry, microbiology, processing, and preservation is expected.

Other duties include resolving formulation and process issues, improving product stability, texture, taste, nutrition, and shelf life, and assessing raw materials or alternate ingredient options. The position also demands oversight of food safety and compliance requirements such as labeling rules and applicable standards like FSSAI, FDA, or other relevant authorities.

In addition, the role supports HACCP, GMP, and broader food safety systems, helps manufacturing and quality teams address technical concerns, and works on process efficiency, yield improvement, and cost reduction without compromising quality. Collaboration with Procurement, Quality Assurance, Marketing, and Operations is essential, along with support for technical presentations, customer-specific needs, and product customization where required.

Documentation is a significant part of the job, including maintaining development records, product specifications, technical files, SOPs, reports, and audit-ready traceability.

Qualifications and experience

A bachelor’s degree in Food Technology, Food Science, Food Engineering, or a closely related discipline is mandatory. A master’s degree is preferred.

The role calls for at least 8 to 15 years of experience in food product development, food manufacturing, or R&D. Candidates should have hands-on exposure to commercialization, scale-up, and working with food safety and regulatory systems.

Successful candidates should bring strong technical capability in ingredient functionality, product formulation, shelf-life evaluation, sensory assessment, pilot-scale trials, factory trials, and technical documentation.

Success in this role will be measured by the timely development and launch of products, consistency in product quality, reduction in formulation and production costs, improvements in shelf life and stability, strong audit outcomes, and efficient development cycles.
