Job description
About the Company
Mercury is a leading European provider of construction solutions. The company delivers and oversees complex engineering and construction programmes for major global organisations. Its work supports technologies and important advancements that connect people, communities, and businesses, helping them achieve ambitious goals.
The business operates across several sectors, including enterprise data centres, advanced technology and life sciences, hyperscale data centres, and fire protection. Mercury places strong emphasis on innovation, determination, and consistent delivery. It also aims to support employees with meaningful challenges, a collaborative team environment, and opportunities to grow.
Role Overview
The Senior Electrical Estimator will own the preparation of accurate, detailed electrical estimates from beginning to end, with support from the pre-construction team and relevant business units. The role requires a solid understanding of basic construction technology. The estimator will prepare bills of quantities and estimates using 2D drawings and/or BIM models, engage with the local supply chain for subcontractor pricing and market rates, and build a fully priced bid that reflects the client’s requirements and current market conditions for review by the Electrical Estimation Manager. The role also includes completing client pricing documents for submission.
Key Responsibilities
- Take full responsibility for bids and deliver the estimate through to presentation for the Electrical Estimation Manager.
- Review tender documents, define the project scope, and identify all required tender responses.
- Study drawings, specifications, addenda, and related documents to determine all items that need measuring and pricing for inclusion in the bill of quantities and estimate, including phasing needs.
- Maintain completed records and store final documents in line with company filing procedures.
- Use estimation take-off software confidently for both 2D and 5D applications and coordinate with design colleagues to gather required information.
- Request pricing from local vendors and subcontractors, then review quotations for missing scope items and inconsistencies before entering the correct figures into the bid.
- Hold mid-bid meetings with supply chain partners when needed.
- Perform subcontractor package analysis by comparing quotations against the prepared budget and selecting the best-value offer.
- Work with the construction team to source rates based on actual costs from earlier projects and apply lessons learned.
- Confirm lead times with suppliers and subcontractors.
- Track all tender addenda before and after submission and assess them for changes.
- Update schedules and pricing to reflect revised tender information.
- Support value engineering proposals by preparing and supplying related cost data.
- Manage time effectively to meet demanding deadlines.
- Guide and support junior members of the team.
- Travel occasionally for day trips or overnight stays to attend mid-bid and post-bid client meetings.
Qualifications and Requirements
- At least 5 years of estimating experience.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- High numerical ability.
- Good understanding of measurement methods and cost/valuation reconciliation concepts.
- Computer literacy and experience with relevant estimating software.
- Strong accuracy and close attention to detail.
Desirable Background
- Prior experience in a trade or engineering environment is an advantage.
