Job description

About Mercury

Mercury is a forward-looking New Zealand organisation that provides energy and telecommunications to more Kiwis than many others, while helping lead the shift toward renewable energy and a more sustainable future. Its purpose is to care for tomorrow by connecting people and place today, with a focus on creating better outcomes for its people, communities, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

The Customer business is moving through a significant phase of growth and change, and Mercury has introduced several new roles to help strengthen structure, accountability, commercial ownership, and alignment across channels.

Role overview

This senior brand-led position sits within the Marketing team and is responsible for shaping Mercury’s brand strategy. The role is central to how the company is perceived, remembered, and selected by customers, with a strong focus on brand growth and customer acquisition.

You will guide broad brand expression across integrated campaigns and paid, owned, earned, and social channels. The role also involves leading a small team to deliver consistent, distinctive, and purposeful brand work.

Key responsibilities

  • Set Mercury’s yearly brand direction, including objectives, audience focus, and investment priorities that grow brand equity and support customer acquisition over time.
  • Lead integrated brand campaigns from the initial brief and creative development through media, production, and performance review.
  • Use brand health data, customer research, social insights, and competitor analysis to shape and refine brand strategy.
  • Protect brand consistency by upholding Mercury’s standards, tone of voice, and visual identity across all touchpoints.
  • Turn business goals into practical brand opportunities that link commercial priorities with brand activity.
  • Coach and develop the Social Lead and Brand Executive through clear direction, support, and ongoing investment in their growth.
  • Oversee agency partnerships and brand budgets carefully to secure strong creative output and measurable return on investment.

What you will bring

  • More than 8 years of experience in brand management, with exposure to brand strategy, broad brand execution, and brand transformation.
  • A strong track record of running integrated campaigns end to end and improving awareness, consideration, and preference.
  • Experience using brand-building to support customer acquisition in both B2B and B2C settings.
  • Experience in professional services is highly valued, along with work in consumer-focused or purpose-led brands.
  • Good creative judgement, including the ability to back standout ideas and identify when work is not strong enough.
  • Confidence in shaping brand strategy from business needs and influencing senior leaders, agencies, and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience guiding or mentoring direct reports, with a genuine interest in helping others develop.

Why join Mercury

  • Receive an extra 5 days of leave each year through MyDays.
  • Get a one-time tax-free payment of $400 to help set up a home office.
  • Work in a diverse environment where different abilities and talents are valued and encouraged.
  • Benefit from annual salary reviews, a strong parental leave policy, and the option to buy additional leave.
  • Enjoy the opportunities, career pathways, and facilities of one of New Zealand’s largest multi-utility providers.
  • Access a flexible working policy with the freedom to work from purpose-built offices and from home.
  • Receive discounted health insurance plus free life and income insurance.
  • Take part in a strong wellbeing programme, including up to $100 in annual check-ups and a confidential assistance service.
  • Access gender affirmation leave and supportive bereavement leave, including for the loss of a pet.
