Job description
About the Royal Ontario Museum
The Royal Ontario Museum, established in 1914, welcomes more than 1.3 million visitors each year and stands among Canada’s most visited museums and one of North America’s leading cultural institutions. With a collection of over 18 million artworks, cultural objects, and natural history specimens displayed across more than 40 galleries and exhibition spaces, ROM brings together art, culture, and nature in a setting designed to connect people with the past, present, and shared future. The museum is seeking motivated and dependable people who share its mission, values, and commitment to community engagement.
Role overview
ROM is looking for Security Guards for full-time, part-time, and casual opportunities. In this role, you will help safeguard visitors, staff, and collections by monitoring security systems, carrying out patrols, managing crowds, responding to emergencies, and supporting incident investigations. The museum provides on-site training, a uniform and shoe allowance, additional hours where available, vacation time, and a comprehensive benefits package for eligible positions.
Key duties
- Oversee the safety of employees, guests, and artifacts by operating alarm, CCTV, and access control systems.
- Apply strong control room knowledge to manage dispatching, access systems, and surveillance equipment efficiently.
- React promptly to alarms, assess incidents, and help prevent loss or damage.
- Walk assigned galleries and other museum areas to maintain visibility and deter security issues.
- Manage crowd flow during busy events to support visitor safety.
- Inspect parcels and packages to stop prohibited or hazardous items from entering the building.
- Carry out detailed incident investigations and prepare findings and recommendations for reports.
- Handle emergency and non-emergency calls professionally and coordinate with emergency services when required.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned to support the museum’s safety priorities.
Required background and capabilities
Applicants should bring a Law Enforcement or Police Foundations diploma, at least one year of prior security experience or an equivalent mix of education and experience, and a valid Ontario Security Guard Licence in good standing at the time of application. First Aid and CPR Level C certification with AED training is also required when applying, and Smart Serve certification must be in place by the time of hire. Candidates should understand CCTV, fire panel, and access control systems, be familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures, and be able to work alone or with others. Strong conflict resolution, communication, honesty, integrity, computer, and email skills are important, as is the ability to stand for long periods and wear Green Patch safety footwear while on duty.
Compensation and employment terms
This posting is intended to build a candidate pool for future opportunities rather than fill a current vacancy. Start date is ASAP, and applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. Employment status includes full-time, part-time, permanent, and contract opportunities. The full-time schedule is 40 hours per week, while the part-time schedule is up to 20 hours per week. The role is part of SEIU, Local 2. The hourly rate ranges from $24.41 during probation to $28.72. Probation lasts 60 days for full-time staff and 480 hours for part-time or casual staff. The role is based onsite in Toronto, Ontario.
Benefits and extras
- Comprehensive benefits for eligible permanent and full-time contract roles, including premium-free coverage for individuals and families, a health spending account, flexible work options where applicable, and an Employee Assistance Program.
- Participation in the CAAT Pension Plan with employer-matched defined benefit contributions, survivor benefits, predictable lifetime retirement income, and early retirement options.
- Parental leave top-up to 95% of salary for 17 weeks for new parents.
- Free ROM membership for permanent full-time and part-time employees.
- Discounts to more than 200 attractions through Attractions Ontario.
- On-site training, a uniform allowance, shoe allowance, extra hours, and vacation time.
Interview and hiring process
Shortlisted candidates can expect an initial 30-minute virtual conversation with a recruiter, followed by a one-hour interview with the hiring manager and HR, conducted either virtually or in person. A second one-hour interview may include a case study, role-related scenario discussion, and possibly a tour of ROM. Virtual interviews are held through Microsoft Teams and may be recorded. Final hiring is subject to a criminal background check, reference verification, and other checks depending on the role.
Diversity, accessibility, and additional information
ROM encourages applications from racialized persons, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, 2SLGBTQI+ individuals, and others who can broaden representation and perspectives. The organization promotes a workplace free from discrimination and harassment and does not require Canadian experience; international applicants with comparable experience are welcome. Candidates needing accommodation during the hiring process can contact [email protected]. ROM also uses technology-assisted screening tools, including JazzHR TalentFit, to support application review, while all hiring decisions remain with human reviewers.
