About Polaris Education and Ormston School

Role Summary and Benefits
We are looking for a School Caretaker to maintain the school's premises, ensure safety, and support day-to-day operations. This full-time, permanent contract is based at our Headingley location in Leeds. The position offers a basic salary of 3,402 annually with comprehensive benefits including 30 days of annual leave (which increases to 35 with service length), bank holidays, a company pension scheme, life assurance, as well as an Employee Discount Scheme and Medical Cash Plan.
Key Responsibilities
- Keep school buildings and grounds clean, safe, and secure.
- Perform cleaning, handyman tasks, routine maintenance, minor repairs, refurbishment, and porterage duties.
- Oversee cleaning staff supervision when necessary.
- Advocate for health and safety standards throughout the school environment.
- Manage moving furniture and equipment as required.
- Maintain school furniture and fittings and report problems to the Headteacher.
- Conduct small repairs and DIY projects.
- Organize larger repairs and request contractor quotes.
- Perform daily cleaning tasks such as litter picking and waste disposal.
- Handle emergency cleaning functions including gritting and spill clearance.
- Coordinate annual deep cleaning of classrooms, communal areas, and specialized rooms like food technology spaces.
- Maintain cleaning supplies and tools, ensuring appropriate stock levels and replacements.
- Serve as the main key holder for school security.
- Secure the premises by locking/unlocking and setting alarm systems as needed, including outside school hours.
- Conduct end-of-day checks ensuring doors, windows, gates, lights, gas, and electrical appliances are securely turned off.
- Respond promptly to security alarms and any call-outs consistent with established procedures.
Candidate Requirements
- Previous experience in property maintenance or caretaking within a school setting is preferred.
- Familiarity with building maintenance and security systems including alarms.
- Solid understanding of health and safety regulations.
- Basic DIY and repair skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with contractors and visitors.
- Proficiency in literacy and numeracy.
- Ability to engage effectively with children and young people, especially those with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
- Possession of a full UK driving license and access to a personal vehicle.
