Job description
Role overview
This temporary, three-year full-time opportunity sits within the Economic Development and City Safety team at the Council Centre in Hobart. Three vacancies are available. The role is part of the Council-backed Safe City Liaison Program, which aims to strengthen safety, community confidence and engagement in Hobart’s CBD.
The position follows an educate, engage and refer approach. Rather than enforcing compliance, it is centered on early intervention, calming situations, and connecting people to the right support. The role is intended to be highly visible, approachable and supportive of positive interactions with residents, businesses and visitors.
Key duties
- Carry out regular CBD patrols, maintain a strong public presence, observe activity in public spaces and help discourage anti-social behaviour through engagement and reporting.
- Build and sustain productive relationships with businesses, community members and partner organisations to identify and respond to issues affecting safety and amenity.
- Handle incidents in a calm, non-confrontational and education-led way, including de-escalating tense situations and directing vulnerable people to appropriate support services.
- Document observations, incidents and compliance-related matters accurately, and work alongside Council, Tasmania Police and other relevant agencies to achieve coordinated outcomes.
What the role calls for
The Council is seeking a community-minded professional with excellent interpersonal skills and a steady, confident manner when working in public spaces. The right person will be able to establish trust with a wide range of people, respond appropriately to difficult situations and act with professionalism and sound judgement. A collaborative mindset, adaptability and a genuine commitment to safer communities are essential.
Experience and capability
- Background working directly with the community, preferably in social services, health, emergency response or a related field.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement ability, with the confidence to build rapport and influence behaviour positively.
- Proven conflict resolution and de-escalation capability in complex or challenging situations.
- Capacity to work within regulatory frameworks and support compliance through education and engagement.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships across varied stakeholder groups.
- Comfort working independently, taking initiative and contributing to team goals.
